Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers lose against the New Orleans Saints. At the same time, the New England Patriots win against the Los Angeles Chargers. ran summarises the late games.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at New Orleans Saints 36:27
It’s no secret that Tom Brady has problems against the New Orleans Saints. Last season, the Bucs lost both games in the regular season. In the playoffs, however, they came out victorious. And also on the 8th day of the 2021 season Tampa Bay started well. A 12-yard touchdown pass from Tom Brady, caught by Chris Godwin, gave the Buccaneers the lead. Tre’Quan Smith equalised before the end of the first quarter. Justin Winston found the wide receiver with a 16-yard pass.
Shortly after the start of the second quarter, Jameis Winston was injured. Because backup QB Tysom Hill was also injured, Trevor Siemian came into the game. Nevertheless, the Saints were able to dominate the second quarter, also due to two turnovers by Tom Brady, and went into halftime with a 16:7 lead.
In the third quarter, the Saints picked up where they left off. Alvin Kamara ran for a yard into the end zone to extend the lead to 23-7. Tampa Bay stayed with the Saints through a touchdown by Giovanni Bernard and after a 41-yard pass to Mike Evans and successful PAT the score was only 21:23 shortly before the end of the third quarter.
The Saints extended their narrow lead a little with a field goal. But a short time later, the New Orleans defence was asleep and allowed a 50-yard pass from Tom Brady to Cyril Grayson. The ensuing two-point conversion was unsuccessful.
With 1:44 left to play, the Saints regained the lead (29-27). In the decisive drive, Brady missed a pick six that sealed the Buccaneers’ 36-27 defeat. While the Bucs fall to 6-2, the Saints are 5-2 with one less game to play.
New England Patriots at Los Angeles Chargers 27-24
The New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Chargers played an exciting game. In the first quarter, both teams were able to score a rushing touchdown. After the Chargers had taken the lead through Austin Ekeler, the “Pats” equalised through Damien Harris.
In the second quarter, Justin Herbert found his wide receiver Keenan Allen for a 5-yard touchdown pass that put Los Angeles in front 14-7. After two field goals by Nick Folk, the game went into halftime with the Chargers up 14-13.
Another field goal gave New England a brief lead before the Chargers restored the old one-point lead. They went into the last quarter with a 17:16 lead.
There Justin Herbert threw his second interception, which Adrian Philips carried 26 yards into the Chargers’ end zone. A successful two-point conversion gave the Patriots a seven-point lead. Nick Folk then kicked another field goal to make it a two-possession game for the Chargers.
The Chargers could not turn around the 10-point deficit. Joshua Palmer did score a touchdown. However, the Patriots secured the subsequent onside kick. New England now has an even record (4-4) after the win, while the Chargers suffered their third loss of the season (4-3).
Washington Football Team at Denver Broncos 10:17
Both teams came into the game sluggishly. It wasn’t until the second quarter of the game that the first points were put on the scoreboard. Both the Broncos and the football team converted a field goal before Melvin Gordon caught a 15-yard pass from Teddy Bridgewater with just under 70 seconds left before halftime to give Denver a 10-3 lead. This was also the score at the break.
The third quarter was largely uneventful. It was not until 38 seconds before the end that the Washington football team could equalise with a 20-yard receiving touchdown by DeAndre Carter and the successful PAT.
With just under 4:30 minutes remaining, Melvin Gordon scored his second touchdown. After an interception by Taylor Heinicke, the game seemed to be decided, but Melvin Gordon lost the ball and gave Washington another chance to equalise. However, the football team did not take advantage of this chance and thus the Denver Broncos (4-4) won 17-10 against Washington (2-6).
Jacksonville Jaguars at Seattle Seahawks 7:31
The Seattle Seahawks picked up a non-threatening win against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Geno Smith, filling in for the still-injured Russell Wilson, ran himself into the end zone in the first quarter before completing a 16-yard pass to D.K. Metcalf in the second. Ten seconds before half-time, Jason Myers increased the lead to 17-0 with a field goal.
The picture was the same in the second half. After a 5-yard pass, D.K. Metcalf caught his second touchdown of the day.
The rest of the game was slow. It was not until the last quarter, 1:49 before the end, that there were points to be seen again. Jamal Agnew caught a pass from Trevor Lawrence and “shortened” the score to 7:24. Travis Homer ran the following onside kick directly to a touchdown.
So the game ended 31-7 for the Seahawks, who now stand at 3-5. The Jaguars remain in the bottom of the league with only one win.
