In the Sunday Night Game, the San Francisco 49ers prevailed 22:16 at home against the Los Angeles Chargers. The Chargers went scoreless after halftime against a strong 49ers defense.
Munich – In the Sunday Night Game, the San Francisco 49ers won 22:16 at home against the Los Angeles Chargers.
The first points on the scoreboard, however, came from the Chargers. Quarterback Justin Herbert found wide receiver DeAndre Carter with a 32-yard pass after just over three and a half minutes, who scored a touchdown to make it 6-0.
Dicker with three field goals in the second quarter
In turn, the 49ers got into the game and kicker Robbie Gould capped a 14-play San Francisco drive with a field goal to tie the game at 3-7.
In the second quarter, Chargers kicker Cameron Dicker was the defining figure. Two field goals (47 and 25 yards) from him gave Los Angeles a 13-3 lead just over seven minutes before the break.
49ers defence wakes up
Next, 49ers playmaker Jimmy Garoppolo took charge and scored the hosts’ first touchdown on a quarterback sneak shortly after the Two Minute Warning. But the score was not 13:10 going into the dressing room. Dicker was allowed to kick again for the Chargers as the clock expired and increased the lead to 16:10 with a 40-yard field goal.
However, these were the last points of the Chargers in this Sunday Night Game. Because as well as the Los Angeles defence had controlled San Francisco’s rushing game in the first half, the 49ers defence performed just as well in the second half and allowed no more points against them.
McCaffrey turns the game around
Instead, the 49ers came back in the third quarter with a 67-yard field goal by Gould to tie the game at 13-16. Then running back star Christian McCaffrey turned the game in San Francisco’s favour with a touchdown after a two-yard rush. Gould made the 49ers’ victory perfect with a field goal shortly before the end and made it 22:16 – he had missed the extra point after McCaffrey’s touchdown.
The Chargers had several chances to come back at the end. Incompletions and finally an interception by Herbert prevented Los Angeles from taking anything home in San Francisco.
This leaves both teams with a record of 5-4 after Week 10. The Chargers in second place in the AFC West behind top team Kansas City Chiefs. The 49ers are also second in the NFC West and within reach of division-leading Seattle Seahawks.
