NFL: New England Patriots and Dallas Cowboys celebrate big wins

The New England Patriots have outclassed the Cleveland Browns. The Dallas Cowboys do the same with the Atlanta Falcons.NFL News summarises the 7 p.m. games of the 10th NFL game day.

Cleveland Browns at New England Patriots 7:45

The New England Patriots got an important win in their battle for the playoffs, improving their record to six wins and four losses with a home win over the Browns. Cleveland stands at a 5-5 record.

The Browns went all out on the first drive, going for it on fourth down just outside the end zone, and were rewarded with a touchdown pass from Baker Mayfield to Austin Hooper. However, these were to remain the only points for Cleveland. The Patriots answered with a touchdown on the following drive. Mac Jones connected with Hunter Henry in the end zone.

An interception by Mayfield gave the Patriots good field position, so that Rhamondre Stevenson ran into the end zone on the very next play. By halftime, the Patriots went up 21-7 with a brilliant touchdown pass from Jones to Kendrick Bourne and a field goal.

When Stevenson scored his second touchdown in the third period to increase the lead to 28-7, the game was practically decided. In the fourth period, Henry caught his second touchdown pass. Finally, backup quarterback Brian Hoyer got some practice and threw a touchdown pass to Jakobi Meyers.

Mayfield never found his game and only managed 73 passing yards before he was replaced by backup Case Keenum due to injury. Jones, on the other hand, was very effective with 198 passing yards and three touchdown passes.

Atlanta Falcons at Dallas Cowboys 3:43

The Dallas Cowboys gave the Atlanta Falcons a thrashing. Quarterback Dak Prescott threw passes for 296 yards and two touchdowns, also getting into the end zone once himself. Matt Ryan, the Falcons’ playmaker, had a below-average performance. He completed only nine of his 21 passes for 117 yards and threw two interceptions.

The crux of the matter came in the first period. Instead of kicking a field goal from the opponent’s 32-yard line to cut the deficit to 6:7, the Falcons played out the fourth attempt – to no avail. The Cowboys used the following drive for a touchdown run by Ezekiel Elliott. This gave Dallas a reassuring 14-3 lead. By halftime, the lead had increased to 38-3.

The Cowboys stand at a 7-2 record, the Falcons at 4-5.

New Orleans Saints at Tennessee Titans 21:23

The Tennessee Titans continue to be unstoppable, celebrating their sixth straight win against the New Orleans Saints to improve their record to 8-2.

In the absence of the injured star running back Derrick Henry, the running game was hardly existent with only 66 yards. But quarterback Ryan Tannehill shone with 213 passing yards, one touchdown pass and one touchdown. The outstanding man of the defence was Jeffery Simmons with two sacks and two tackles for loss.

Saints quarterback Trevor Siemian turned in a strong game with 298 passing yards and two touchdown passes, but still couldn’t lead his team to its hoped-for sixth win of the season as the onside kick failed with 1:16 minutes left in the game, preventing New Orleans from regaining possession.

Jacksonville Jaguars at Indianapolis Colts 17:23

A touchdown run by Jonathan Taylor, a blocked punt by E.J. Speed carried into the end zone, plus a field goal. The Colts got off to a perfect start, taking a 17-0 lead early in the first quarter.

But the Jaguars fought their way back into the game. A touchdown and a successful two-point conversion brought them back to within 17-20 with ten minutes to go. However, no further points were added. A field goal by Colts kicker Michael Badgley provided the final score.

Colts playmaker Carson Wentz threw passes for 180 yards, remained without a touchdown pass and without an interception. Trevor Lawrence, the Jaguars’ No. 1 pick, connected on just 16 of his 35 pass attempts, throwing for 162 yards but no touchdowns.

The Colts stand at a 5-5 record, the Jaguars at 2-7.

Buffalo Bills at New York Jets 45:17

After the surprising 6:9 loss against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Buffalo Bills got back on track against the New York Jets. After the game was still somewhat open at the break with an intermediate score of 17:3, they pulled away in the third period to 38:3.

Bills quarterback Josh Allen had a spectacular game with 366 yards and two touchdown passes with one interception. His favourite receiving station was Stefon Diggs with 162 passing yards and a touchdown. Mike White, the Jets’ backup quarterback, on the other hand, had a pitch black day. He threw passes for 251 yards, but also four interceptions.

While the Buffalo Bills are at seven wins and three losses, the Jets have a 2-7 record.

Detroit Lions at Pittsburgh Steelers 16-16 after overtime

The Detroit Lions’ first win of the season was within reach. Ryan Santoso could have been the match-winner in overtime with a 48-yard field goal, but put the ball well wide of the goalposts.

The Steelers, on the other hand, got as far as the opponent’s 39-yard line in the final seconds of overtime and would probably have attempted a field goal, too, had Pat Freiermuth not fumbled in this decisive phase of the game.

Both teams were handicapped at the playmaker position. The Pittsburgh Steelers had to do without their quarterback Ben Roethlisberger because of a Corona infection. His replacement Mason Rudolph threw for 242 yards, one touchdown pass and one interception. Jared Goff, the Lions’ quarterback, on the other hand, had to play despite a back injury, but was not a factor with only 92 passing yards. German wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown was his favourite touchdown target with 61 yards.
