NFL: Indianapolis Colts beat San Francisco 49ers – Rain battle turns into turnover fest

The Indianapolis Colts beat the San Francisco 49ers in the Monday Night Game of the 7th NFL game day. The so-called “Bomb Cyclone” causes stormy rainy weather in California. Both offenses have problems accordingly.

Munich – It was a game in which both teams had to deal with adverse weather conditions: In the end, the Indianapolis Colts won 30:18 against the San Francisco 49ers. The Colts’ defence, which forced a total of four turnovers, was the main reason for the win.

The Californians started well in the pouring rain. Running back Elijah Mitchell capped the first drive with a 14-yard run into the end zone. Kicker Joey Slye missed the extra point, but he converted two field goals in the first quarter.

Horror start for the Colts

The situation was completely different for the Colts: Running back Jonathan Taylor fumbled on the very first drive. Carson Wentz also fumbled in the first quarter. But the “Indy” offence caught itself: first tight end Mo Alie-Cox caught a touchdown pass, then a fumble by the hosts favoured a rushing touchdown by Carson Wentz. After a missed two-point conversion, it was 13:12 from the visitors’ point of view going into halftime.

Colts star Taylor scored the only touchdown in the third quarter. Indianapolis went into the final period with an eight-point lead. After a touchdown pass from Garoppolo to Deebo Samuel, the game got tense again for a short time.

Garoppolo turnover decides the game

The Colts managed another field goal. Then a Garoppolo pass slipped through Samuel’s hands and landed in the arms of Colts cornerback Xavier Rhodes. In the following drive, Michael Pittman scored a touchdown to decide the game.

Wentz completed 17 of his 26 passes for 150 yards and registered two touchdown passes and a fumble. Garoppolo finished with 181 passing yards and one touchdown pass, but he also had two interceptions and a fumble.

For the 49ers it was already the fourth defeat in a row. With a 2-4 record they have to fight hard not to lose the connection to the Wild Card spots for the postseason. The Colts are slowly finding their form with their second win in a row. But with a 3-4 record, Wentz and co. still have a lot of work to do if they want to make it to the postseason.
