The New England Patriots continue their winning streak. The six-time Super Bowl champions win 25-0 at the Atlanta Falcons in a game dominated by the Patriots defence. It is the fifth win in a row.
Munich/Atlanta – The New England Patriots’ defence underlined its status as one of the best in the league.
In the NFL’s Thursday Night Football game to open Week 11, Bill Belichick’s men held the Atlanta Falcons to zero points in a 25-0 win.
However, because rookie Mac Jones and his offence did not have a good day, the game remained exciting until the fourth quarter. Jones threw for 207 yards, one touchdown and one interception, he was sacked three times. Nevertheless, the 23-year-old made hardly any mistakes and completed 85 percent of his passes to his own man.
Four sacks, four interceptions, no points
Not only did Matt Ryan not have a good day, he had a very bad day with his offence. Not only was he sacked a total of four times, when he had two chances to make it a one possession game in the fourth quarter, his passes were intercepted by safety Devin McCourty and cornerback J.C. Jackson, who now stands at six interceptions.
In the fourth quarter, the banged-up Ryan was replaced by backup Josh Rosen, who threw another interception that was returned to the end zone by Kyle van Noy. After that, rookie Feleipe Franks got a go, this time it was Adrian Philipps who grabbed another pick.
In the end, the Falcons would not manage a single point, although they were inside the redzone twice, but once Younghoe Koo missed a field goal and once a fourth attempt was unsuccessful. They were the last team in the league to score on every trip to the redzone to date.
So while head coach Arthur Smith’s offense has managed just three points in the last two games, it’s a very different story for the Patriots: In the past three games, they’ve allowed just 13 points and one touchdown.
Patriots atop AFC East for now
With this win, New England moves past the Buffalo Bills to the top of the AFC East for now, they stand at a record of 7-4.
The Bills (6-3) take on the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday and will try to take back the division lead. Before the season, such a close race was not expected.
So the Patriots, who are currently second in the entire AFC even behind the Tennessee Titans (8-2), have already reached the number of wins on game day eleven that they had all of last year.
The Atlanta Falcons remain in last place in the NFC South with their sixth loss of the season. A playoff spot, which the Falcons occupied just a fortnight ago, is currently a distant memory.
