NFL Week 2: Wilson experiences debacle with Broncos, Giants manage comeback

The Denver Broncos gave away a victory they thought was safe. With the New York Giants and the Washington Commanders, two teams make a strong comeback. The San Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys win their games with confidence.

The San Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys have an unblemished record after two days of play. The same is surprisingly true for the Washington Commanders, who won against the Denver Broncos despite a temporary 18-point deficit. The New York Giants also experienced a crazy game.

San Francisco 49ers @ Los Angeles Rams 30:20 (17:17)

The San Francisco 49ers had to fight hard for the win against the Los Angeles Rams. Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford threw for 307 yards and a touchdown, but he also had two interceptions. The Rams’ outstanding player was Puka Nacua, who caught passes for 130 yards.

49ers quarterback Brock Purdy threw for 206 yards and a touchdown. Running back Christian McCaffrey provided a total of 135 yards in space and a touchdown. San Francisco has won its first two games, while Los Angeles stands at one win and one loss.

New York Giants @ Arizona Cardinals 31:28 (0:20)

The New York Giants have made a strong comeback. After the 0:40 of Week 1 against the Dallas Cowboys, everything initially pointed to another debacle for the Giants. New York went into the break with a 0:20 deficit. For the first time since 1934 (!) they remained without points for six quarters in a row.

After half-time, however, they turned up the heat. With 23 seconds left, kicker Graham Gano kicked a 34-yard field goal to give his team the win. Quarterback Daniel Jones recorded 321 passing yards, two touchdown passes, one interception and ran himself into the end zone once. The Giants have a record of one win and one loss, while the Cardinals are still winless.

But there was a downer for the Giants: star running back Saquon Barkley, who scored two touchdowns, suffered an injury in the final quarter and could not leave the field without help. The exact diagnosis is still pending.

New York Jets @ Dallas Cowboys 10:30 (10:18)

The Dallas Cowboys have once again underlined their reputation as a potential Super Bowl candidate. Quarterback Dak Prescott threw passes for 255 yards and two touchdowns. CeeDee Lamb was, as usual, a reliable kick-off station with 143 receiving yards. The outstanding man on defence was Micah Parsons with two sacks, three tackles for loss and three quarterback hits.

Jets quarterback Zach Wilson, who is standing in for the injured Aaron Rodgers, could not cope at all with the constant pressure from the Cowboys defence. He recorded 170 passing yards and one touchdown pass, but also threw three interceptions.

The Cowboys have won their first two games, while the Jets stand at one win and one loss.

Washington Commanders @ Denver Broncos 35-33 (14-21)

Another disappointing season is in the offing for the Denver Broncos and quarterback Russell Wilson. They gave away a 21-3 lead at home against the Washington Commanders.

The Broncos came back to within two points with a successful Hail Mary on the last play of the game. But the subsequent two-point conversion failed. The Broncos thus lost their first two games of the season, while the Commanders got off to a strong start with two wins.

Wilson finished with 309 passing yards, three touchdown passes and one interception. Sam Howell, the Commanders’ quarterback, recorded 299 passing yards and two touchdown passes. Washington’s defence also played a big part in the win, sacking Wilson seven times.
