San Francisco 49ers defeat Green Bay Packers: Special Teams make the difference

In an extremely exciting game of the Divisional Round, the San Francisco 49ers manage the next big surprise. Aaron Rodgers and his Green Bay Packers come up empty once again.

Munich – The playoff madness continues!

The San Francisco 49ers have caused the next big surprise and knocked the Green Bay Packers out of the NFL playoffs. In an extremely exciting game, kicker Robbie Gould made the decisive field goal in the closing seconds to give the 49ers a 13-10 victory. This means that the journey for superstar Aaron Rodgers and Co., who started these playoffs as big favourites to win the Super Bowl, already ends after the first outing.

49ers at Packers: special teams decide the game

Although the Packers were in control of the game for long stretches, jumping out to an early 7-0 lead, they were unable to pull away decisively. A field goal attempt shortly before the half-time break was blocked by the 49ers. In the aftermath, Rodgers continued to have trouble getting the Packers’ high-powered offence going. Two converted field goals by Gould and Mason Crosby gave the Packers a 10-3 lead.

With just under five minutes to go, it was once again the 49ers’ special teams that made the difference. Talanoa Hufanga carried a blocked punt attempt into the Packers’ end zone to equalise. The Packers offence had no answer and had to give the ball away again.

Then the 49ers around quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo showed strong nerves and reached the distance for a field goal attempt.

There, Gould kept his nerve and provided the red and white cheering on the sidelines. With the Packers, the second number one seed was also eliminated, after the Tennessee Titans had already lost to the Cincinnati Bengals earlier.
