The Pittsburgh Steelers are coming off an important win against the Cleveland Browns. And that despite having to play without their kicker Chris Boswell in the second half. The Indianapolis Colts concede another narrow defeat. ran summarises the 7 p.m. games.
Pittsburgh Steelers at Cleveland Browns 15:10
With a returning Baker Mayfiled, it came down to a divisional duel between Steelers and the Browns. Offensive highlights could be counted on one hand in the first half. The defenses of both teams were responsible for those. While Baker Mayfield was sacked four times by the Steelers defence, the Browns-D caught Ben Roethlisberger twice behind the line of scrimmage.
Just before the break, Steelers kicker Chris Boswell was injured. He took a hard hit on a fake punt and was out with concussion.
The second half then began quite promisingly. D’Ernest Johnson, Cleveland’s hero of the last game day, provided the lead with a 10-yard run before Najee Harris ran in a touchdown for the Steelers. In the absence of a second kicker, “Big Ben” attempted a two-point conversion but was unsuccessful.
In the last quarter, the Steelers took the lead for the first time with a touchdown by Pat Freimuth.
Five minutes before the end, Jarvis Landry fumbled in the Steelers’ half. But Pittsburgh could not take advantage of this ball loss. After three plays the drive was over. The Browns and Baker Mayfield got another chance to win the game.
However, Baker Mayfield could not get a 4&12 to the man. As a result, the Browns couldn’t get the ball and were defeated 10-15. The Steelers are 4-3 after the win, while the Browns are 4-4.
Tennessee Titans at Indianpolis Colts 34:31
After a dominant win against the Kansas City Chiefs last week, the Titans were looking to follow up. However, it was the Indianapolis Colts who took the lead, ending the first drive with a successful pass from Carson Wentz also Michael Pittman and taking the lead. After an interception by Ryan Tannahill and another TD pass from Wentz to Pittman, it was already 14-0 midway through the first quarter. But Tennessee fought back and also scored twice in the second quarter. A Geoff Swaim touchdown, plus a 57-yard TD run by A.J. Brown and a field goal with time running out gave the Titans a 17-14 lead at halftime.
The game remained entertaining in the second half. First it was Tennessee , who regained the lead after a touchdown. Then Carson Wentz and Jack Doyle for another lead change.
Early in the fourth quarter, Randy Bullock tied the game 24-24 with a field goal. With an interception that the Titans were able to take 2-yards into the Colts’ end zone, the victory seemed sealed. But a strong Colts drive and a rushing touchdown with 22 seconds left tied the game again and sent it into overtime.
Both teams had to end their first drives with punts. In the Colts’ second drive, Wentz threw an interception. With a field goal from 44 yards, the Titans won the game and now stand at 6-2. The Colts have to accept another close defeat and stand at 3-5.
Cincinnati Bengals at New York Jets 34:31
The game in New York started with unusual scenes. The Jets have not yet managed to score points in the first quarter this season. After a touchdown the Jets led 7:0 early on. In the following White was convincing and brought among other things all of his first ten passes to the man, before he threw two interceptions, which the Bengals however only turned into seven points. Things went better for the Bengals in the second quarter.
After a rushing tochdown by Joe Mixon and a receiving touchdown by rookie Ja’Marr Chase, the Bengals seemed to be back on track. Shortly before the break, however, the Jets, in the person of Braxton Berrios, cut the deficit to 17:14.
The Jets did not let up in the second half either. Two field goals by Matt Amendola kept the game exciting despite a tochdown by Joe Mixon, before it was 31:20 after a tochdown by Tyler Boyd. But the Jets, who played a good game, did not let that get them down either. Ty Johnson made sure of the connection with a strong run on the sidelines. After the unsuccessful 2-point conversion attempt, the score was 31-26.
With 3:45 minutes to go, the surprise of the day was complete. The Bengals were unable to answer a Tyler Kroft touchdown and a successful 2-point conversion caught by quarterback Mike White himself and suffered a painful 34-31 defeat. Mike White finished the game with 405 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. The Jets thus stand at a 2-5 record, while Cincinnati suffers its third loss of the season.
Los Angeles Rams at Houston Texans 38-22
The Los Angeles Rams entered the game as clear favourites. With the first drive of the game, the Rams were able to score immediately. Running back Darrell Henderson caught a pass from Matthew Stafford for the lead. In the second quarter, a field goal, another touchdown pass from Stafford caught by Robert Woods and a rushing TD by Henderson followed. At halftime, the Rams led 24-0 against the Texans, who never found their way into the game.
Two more touchdowns by Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods put the Rams further in front. At 38-0, the Texans also scored for the first time. After a 1-yard rush by Rex Burkhead and the subsequent successful PAT, the score was 38:7. But that was not enough. After a 45-yard touchdown by Brandin Cooks, a successful onside kick, another touchdown with a successful 2-point conversion, the score was 38:22. However, it was to remain with the comeback attempt.
The Rams won a game that, despite the result, was never in danger with 38:22 and improve their record to 7-1, while the Texans concede their seventh defeat.
Philadelphia Eagles at Detroit Lions 44:6
For the Lions, it was clear before the game. Celebrate a win to avoid the fourth 0-8 start in franchise history. Fairly quickly, however, it became clear that this could not be avoided. After rushing touchdowns by Boston Scott and Jordan Howard and a field goal, it was already 17-0 for the visitors at half-time.
It got worse in the third quarter. The Eagles scored as they wanted. Both Scott and Howard scored their second touchdown. Darius Slay recovered a fumble and ran it 33 yards into the Lions’ end zone.
At 41-0, the Eagles began to rest their starters. Jalen Hurts’ workday was over. Crazy: Despite 41 points of his team, he remained without a touchdown pass.
In the following, not much more happened. The Eagles won 44-6 in Detroit, perfecting their fourth 0-8 start.
Miami Dolphins at Buffalo Bills 11:26
It took the Buffalo Bills a long time to get going. Against the 1-6 Dolphins, Josh Allen and Co. struggled for a long time. At the break the score was only 3-3.
The game remained tough in the second half as well. Gabriel Davis was able to convert an 8-yard pass from Josh Allen into the first touchdown of the game. The Bills went into the last quarter with a 10-3 lead. There they increased the lead to 17:3 with a Stefon Diggs TD.
But the Dolphins stayed in it. Tua Tagovailoa ran himself into the end zone, and the subsequent 2-point conversion was also successful. A field goal by Tyler Bass and a 7-yard rushing touchdown by Josh Allen shortly before the end of the game ensured a 26:11 victory for the Bills.
Carolina Panthers at Atlanta Falcons 19:13
The game started badly for the Carolina Panthers. On the first play of the game, running back Chuba Hubbard lost the ball. However, Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons could not celebrate the first touchdown until the second quarter when Cordarelle Patterson brought a 15-yard pass into the end zone for 10:3. Two field goals by Zane Gonzales made it a close 10:9 at the break.
Another field goal and a touchdown by Cuba Hubbard in the last quarter made it a two-possession game for the Falcons.
At the end Matt Ryan delivered a momentous interception. Stephon Gilmore, ex-Patriot and newcomer to the Panthers, intercepted Ryan’s pass attempt in his first game for the Panthers. Younghoe Koo was able to kick a field goal, but could not prevent the 19:13 defeat.
