NFL: Drama in Overtime! Pittsburgh Steelers playoff hopes alive

Thanks to a Chris Boswell field goal in overtime, the Pittsburgh Steelers defeat the Baltimore Ravens and have a good chance at the playoffs. Everything now depends on the play of the Raiders and Chargers.

Baltimore – A game-winning field goal by kicker Chris Boswell in overtime kept the Pittsburgh Steelers’ playoff hopes alive.

The Steelers defeated the Baltimore Ravens 16-13 in a dramatic game, meaning quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s career could also go into overtime in the playoffs.

The Steelers stand at 9-7-1 after the game, while the Ravens’ season ended with an 8-9 record. If the Los Angeles Chargers and Las Vegas Raiders don’t tie later Sunday, that puts the Steelers in the playoffs.

T.J. Watt sets record

Roethlisberger totaled 244 passing yards with one touchdown and one interception. Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley amassed 141 passing yards, with no touchdowns and two interceptions. The outstanding player for the Ravens was Latavius Murray with 150 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt provided a highlight just before halftime with his 22.5 sack, tying the season record set by Hall-of-Famer Michael Strahan in 2001.

Defenses dominate first half

The first two quarters were still unexciting. On both sides the defenses dominated while offensively little went together. Lamar Jackson deputy Tyler Huntley was hard pressed by Watt and lost a fumble, but Roethlisberger could not capitalise.

Big Ben himself threw an interception a little later when he looked for his receiver Ray-Ray McCloud, but Ravens safety Geno Stone was in between. However, the Ravens couldn’t do anything with the turnovers either. And so it was only the kickers who put points on the scoreboard. Chris Boswell scored from 28 yards to give the Steelers the lead, Justin Tucker equalised from 24 yards just before the break to make it 3-3 at half-time.

In return, they scored their first touchdown in the second half. Ravens running back Latavius Murray outran everyone and sprinted 46 yards into the end zone. Justin Tucker converted the extra point to make it 10-7.

Tucker sends Ravens into overtime

The Ravens were less fortunate at the end of the third quarter when Huntley tried to pass into the end zone but was intercepted by cornerback Cameron Sutton. The Steelers, however, could not get beyond a 40-yard field goal by Boswell in the ensuing drive.

With just under three minutes remaining, Roethlisberger found Chase Claypool for six yards. Boswell converted the extra point to give the Steelers a 13-10 lead, but Ravens kicker Tucker recovered a 46-yard field goal on the next drive to send the game into overtime.
