The Los Angeles Chargers have beaten the Denver Broncos 19-16 after overtime to close out the sixth day of play, sending Russell Wilson and Co. into crisis for good.

Munich – The Los Angeles Chargers have continued their winning streak and defeated the Denver Broncos 19:16 after overtime. For the franchise from California it is the third win in a row, Denver has now been waiting for a win for three games.

Things actually went really well for the Broncos at the beginning. Under the eyes of Formula 1 record world champion Lewis Hamilton, who has been part owner of the team for a few months, the Broncos started the game 10-0. Responsible for this were Brandon McManus, who could score a 51-yard field goal, and Greg Dulcich. The 22-year-old rookie ran a 39-yard pass from Russell Wilson into the end zone.

The Chargers were not impressed, however, and came back strong in the second quarter, even though quarterback Justin Herbert did not record a touchdown pass in the entire game. Austin Ekeler tied it up with his sixth touchdown in the last three games. LA kicker Dustin Hopkins then tied the game with a 37-yard field goal. Still, the Broncos went into the break with a lead after McManus kicked another field goal just before the end of the second quarter.

The second half was also to be dominated by the kickers. Hopkins equalised again in the third quarter before McManus put Denver back in front in the fourth. With around four minutes to go, it was Hopkins again who scored from 35 yards to make it 16:16.

In the following overtime, a play by the special teams would decide the game. After a Chargers punt, Broncos returner Montrell Washington touched the ball but lost it to Deane Leonard, putting LA in good field position. Again, Hopkins was on the spot and hit the Chargers from 39 yards out for the win.

The win over their division rivals puts the Chargers back on top of the AFC West, while Denver’s fourth loss in their sixth game keeps things looking bleak. Next week, the Broncos host the powerful New York Jets, while Los Angeles face the Seattle Seahawks.
