The Green Bay Packers remain unbeaten at home and also win against the Washington Football Team. In the process, the team benefits from a carelessly given away touchdown by Packers fan Taylor Heinicke.
Green Bay/Munich – A strong Aaron Rodgers led his Green Bay Packers to a 24-10 (14-7) win over the Washington Football Team. Rodgers finished with three touchdown passes and a total of 274 passing yards. His counterpart Taylor Heinicke (268 passing yards, one touchdown pass, one interception), on the other hand, experienced a bitter game in his first outing against his former favourite team Green Bay after an initially good start: In the second half, the quarterback gave away two touchdowns he thought were safe and thus failed to keep his team in the game, although Washington’s offence gained considerably more space (430 yards) than the home side (304).
The Packers scored on their first drive of the game with a touchdown from wide receiver Davante Adams. Heinicke equalised the score in the first quarter with a brilliant 40-yard pass to wide receiver Terry McLaurin. Then, 15 seconds before the break, Rodgers scored another touchdown with a ten-yard pass to Allen Lazard to give the Packers the lead again.
Heinicke drama in the second half
Then the Heinicke drama began: With a strip sack against him, the defence forced a turnover right at the start of the second half. Rodgers completed the ensuing drive with a touchdown pass to tight end Robert Tonyan.
Because Heinicke’s knee touched the ground too early while jumping into the end zone, his touchdown, which he thought was safe, was rightly disallowed. Heinicke had already celebrated his supposed run into the end zone with a Lambeau Leap – a leap into the stands at Packers Stadium.
In the final quarter it got even worse for Heinicke with an interception on a pass attempt into the end zone. So the chase was over in what was actually an even game. Green Bay, on the other hand, scored again in the final quarter with a 39-yard field goal by Mason Crosby. For Washington, only kicker Chris Blewitt could score on his NFL debut with a 45-yard field goal.
EQ St. Brown with run for first down
German-American wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown had his most eye-catching scene for the Packers in the second quarter with a run of 13 yards for a first down.
With a record of 6-1, the Packers, who will meet the Arizona Cardinals away next Thursday, are still at the top of the NFC North. Washington, on the other hand, is under pressure in the NFC East with a 2-5 record. On Game 8, the team has to play the Denver Broncos.
