The Indianapolis Colts lose surprisingly to the Jacksonville Jaguars and now have to fear for their play-off ticket. Amon-Ra St. Brown and the Detroit Lions celebrate a cheering victory at the end of the season. ran summarises the 7 p.m. games.
Indianapolis Colts at Jacksonville Jaguars 11:26
Win and you’re in – the default for the Indianapolis Colts could not have been clearer ahead of their final game of the season in Jacksonville. With a win, the team around star running back Jonathan Taylor could have wrapped up their play-off participation.
However, the Jaguars, who have only won two games so far, had other plans: The strong defence nipped many of the Colts’ drives in the bud and thus took the wind out of the play-off candidates’ sails early on. Taylor in particular was hardly able to develop.
The same was true for playmaker Carson Wentz, who hardly saw any ground against the aggressive defensive line. In the third quarter, the veteran committed two bitter turnovers (one fumble, one interception), which the Jaguars were able to convert into ten points. The Colts’ only touchdown came late in the fourth quarter.
His counterpart Trevor Lawrence ended his first NFL season with an exclamation mark and remained error-free. After 60 minutes, the current No. 1 pick had 223 yards and two touchdowns.
Indianapolis finishes the season with a record of 9-8 and is now in need of some help in the play-off race. The Jaguars improve their record to 3-14.
Green Bay Packers at Detroit Lions 30-37
The two NFC North rivals played a duel of equals to close out the season. Both teams convinced with strong plays and scored four touchdowns each. On the Lions’ side, Amon-Ra St. Brown again excelled, finishing the game with 109 receiving yards and a touchdown.
The Packers, who had already secured the number 1 seed in the NFC, took it a little easier and replaced star quarterback Aaron Rodgers at half-time. Jordan Love gave Green Bay a temporary lead, but his two interceptions in the closing minutes ultimately paved the way for Detroit.
The Lions improve their record to 3-13-1 on the year, while Green Bay (13-4) says goodbye to a bye week and enters the playoffs in a fortnight.
Washington Football Team at New York Giants 22-7
The New York Giants continued their nosedive against their division rivals from the US capital. The offence around third-string quarterback Jake Fromm could only record 177 yards (including 103 passing yards from Fromm) and did not get beyond a touchdown.
The football team, on the other hand, ended the season on a positive note: Running back Antonio Gibson (146 yards and a touchdown on 21 runs) and wide receiver Terry McLaurin (93 yards on four caught balls) made important contributions to the team’s seventh win of the season, while the second touchdown was scored by safety Bobby McCain, who carried an interception 30 yards into the end zone.
After winning the division title last year, Washington has to settle for third place in the NFC East this year (7-10). The Giants are having a disappointing season, failing to get beyond four wins (4-13).
Chicago Bears at Minnesota Vikings 17:31
After trailing for 3:14, the Vikings really turned it on in the second half and ultimately celebrated a well-deserved win to close out the season. Quarterback Kirk Cousins recorded three touchdowns and finished with 250 yards.
Bears signal-caller Andy Dalton slowed down noticeably in the second half after a strong start and made two bitter interceptions in the final quarter, the first of which was recovered by star cornerback Patrick Peterson for a pick-six for the Vikings.
Minnesota finishes the season with a record of 8-9, while Chicago cannot go beyond 7-10.
