In the duel of the two most recent Super Bowl winners without Tom Brady, the Kansas City Chiefs assert themselves at the Philadelphia Eagles. Head coach Andy Reid celebrates his 100th win with the visitors.
Munich – The Kansas City Chiefs bounced back impressively from two defeats to win their away game at the Philadelphia Eagles 42:30 (21:13). It was the third defeat in a row for the home team, which had to do without tackle Lane Johnson at short notice due to personal reasons.
The two opponents delivered a true offensive spectacle that will go down in NFL history. It was only the fourth game in the league without a punt.
Patrick Mahomes ended up with 278 passing yards including five touchdowns and one interception. Jalen Hurts collected a strong 387 passing yards with two touchdowns. Tyreek Hill caught balls for 186 yards and three touchdowns and Philadelphia’s Devonta Smith had 122 yards.
First touchdown by Edwards-Helaire
The hosts got on the scoreboard on their first drive as Jake Elliott converted the field goal from 29 yards. But the Chiefs struck back immediately: Hill stretched towards the pylon but was already out of bounds, Clyde Edwards-Helaire scored the first touchdown after a shuffle pass from Patrick Mahomes.
Dallas Goedert then scored for the Eagles before the visitors took the lead again – this time through Cheetah. After “Philly” had reduced the lead to 13:14 through Elliott from 25 yards, Jody Fortson added to the score for KC shortly before the break.
Eagles touchdown nullified due to penalty
Also to start the second half, the Eagles had only a 31-yard field goal to make it 16-21 after a Mahomes interception.Earlier, Chris Lammons had given the home side another chance to score a touchdown because of an offside penalty on the field-goal attempt, but on the play, J.J. Arcega-Whiteside then conceded an offensive pass interference.
On the other side, Darrel Williams extended the lead with the fourth KC touchdown. The “Birds” did not give up yet and scored their second touchdown in the final period through Kenneth Gainwell. But Hill immediately added another for the Chiefs.
Smith score doesn’t count
The Eagles nearly got back in it, but DeVonta Smith had been out of bounds on his would-be touchdown before his catch – the score didn’t count. In contrast to Hill’s third end zone visit. The final score was then provided by the hosts in the person of Greg Ward.
It was a special success for Andy Reid. Not only because the Chiefs’ head coach was also on the Eagles’ sidelines for a long time. The 63-year-old celebrated his 100th win with KC and is thus the first coach to win a triple-digit number of NFL games with two different teams.
Next Sunday, the Eagles face an early challenge at the Carolina Panthers. The Chiefs host the Buffalo Bills in the Sunday Night Game.
