The Denver Broncos win the London Game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Quarterback Russell Wilson gets off to a bad start, but then leads his team to victory with help from the defense
London – The Denver Broncos won the last game of the NFL International Series in London with 21:17.
The comeback of Russell Wilson, who was still suffering from a thigh injury the week before, got off to a bad start: On the Broncos’ second drive, a pass intended for Courtland Sutton was intercepted by Jaguars cornerback Tyson Campbell.
Trevor Lawrence got good field position at the 37-yard line and didn’t let the opportunity go. The Jaguars quarterback found his tight end Evan Engram in the end zone. The Broncos offense couldn’t really get rolling, and the defense made life difficult for themselves with numerous penalties.
Broncos can’t use momentum
But then came the big play by Denver’s Justin Simmons: He intercepted Lawrence’s pass from the 1-yard line in the end zone. But the Broncos were unable to seize the momentum. Emblematic of their performance up to that point: On 4th and inches, they committed a delay-of-game penalty, which resulted in the next punt.
After another Jaguars field goal, Wilson and Co. finally sent a signal of life. After a penalty-free drive, receiver Jerry Jeudy carried the ball into the end zone after a short pass.
After the break, the Broncos were immediately wide awake. Wilson provided the decisive big play of the drive with a sensitive pass to tight end Greg Dulcich. Two plays later, running back Melvin Gordon ran in from close range for a touchdown – the game was turned around.
Jaguars defence holds, offence cannot capitalise
However, the Jaguars defence turned up the heat and kept the Broncos out of their own half of the field. The Jacksonville offence was too rarely able to capitalise on good field position – at least until the final quarter.
Doug Pederson’s team marched from the 53-yard line to just outside the end zone before running back Travis Etienne Jr. broke the spell and gave the Jags their first touchdown since the first quarter.
However, there was still plenty of time on the clock – and Wilson now took over the game. First the 33-year-old threw a 47-yard pass to receiver K.J. Hamler, then he ran the first down himself. Running back Latavius Murray completed the drive to make it 21:17.
Williams intercepts Lawrence to end the game
The defence capped off their strong performance with the game-deciding interception. Right on the first drive after the tocuhdown, K’Waun Williams intercepted a Lawrence pass and dashed the hopes of Jaguars fans.
Wilson completed 18 of his 30 passes for 252 yards and a touchdown in his comeback. In the process, he threw an interception.
Lawrence had big problems on the other side: He only had 131 passing yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Etienne Jr. excelled for the Jaguars with 156 rushing yards and a touchdown.
