The Kansas City Chiefs are Super Bowl winners! The team around quarterback superstar Patrick Mahomes beat the Philadelphia Eagles 38:35 in a final that was as high class as it was dramatic
Patrick Mahomes has led the Kansas City Chiefs to victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in a high-class and dramatic finale to the 2022 NFL season. The MVP of the season defied his ankle injury, a drop and early problems to celebrate his second Super Bowl triumph with the Chiefs after 2019 with the 38-35 win. Kicker Harrison Butker provided the clincher with a field goal just before the end.
Mahomes threw for 182 yards and three touchdowns. His counterpart Jalen Hurts was not much inferior to Mahomes, he also delivered a very strong game, throwing for 304 yards and a touchdown, he also ran for three touchdowns himself.
Quick scores
The two teams delivered what they promised up front, setting off entertaining fireworks from the start on the field at State Farm Stadium in Glendale.
The Eagles in particular wasted no time in getting their first drive into the end zone. Hurts put the first points on the scoreboard with a quarterback sneak.
The Chiefs’ answer was not long in coming. Mahomes also led his team to a touchdown on the first drive, once again finding his favourite playmaker Travis Kelce for 18 yards, which was his 16th postseason touchdown and tied him with Rob Gronkowski. A short time later, Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker missed a field goal 42 yards away.
Both teams kept their feet on the gas in the second quarter, with the Eagles in particular remaining aggressive and clutch, led by Hurts, who put the first drive in the end zone with a 45-yard bomb to A.J. Brown. Brown made cornerback Trent McDuffie and safety Juan Thornhill look old in the process.
Kansas City Chiefs in trouble
But Hurts’ play is risky – later in the second quarter, he dropped the ball as he tried to repackage it from one hand to the other. Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton picked up the ball and carried it 36 yards into the end zone – 14-14.
But the Chiefs couldn’t quite find their way back into the game despite the gift. Hurts increased the lead to 21:14 with his second touchdown – a run of four yards.
It got even more bitter: Mahomes re-injured his already damaged ankle during a tackle by Eagles linebacker T.J. Edwards. The pain was clearly visible in the quarterback’s face. The Eagles then completed their final drive of the first half with a 35-yard field goal converted by Jake Elliott.
Patrick Mahomes as converted
Whatever Mahomes got for his pain at halftime worked, as the injury didn’t seem to affect him as extremely as feared. “I just bit through it,” Mahomes told “ESPN” after the game.
He backed it up with a couple of runs on the first drive for a total of 75 yards, which gave the Chiefs their next touchdown. Isiah Pacheco took the ball into the end zone. An exclamation point from the Chiefs to start the second half.
The Eagles’ ensuing drive was one for the history books as it went 17 plays – a Super Bowl record. But the Chiefs scored a partial win, allowing only a field goal by Elliott to stay within striking distance at 21-27.
Kansas City Chiefs take lead
The game remained exciting and high-class, and the Chiefs took their first chance in the last quarter to take the lead. Again Mahomes led his team over 75 yards down the field before receiver Kadarius Toney rounded off the play with a catch of five yards and a touchdown – 28:27.
And now it was crunch time and the Chiefs were there in time.
First they stopped the Eagles’ attack with their first 3-and-out in this game. Toney took the ensuing Eagles punt 65 yards to the Eagles’ end zone. And Mahomes didn’t let this chance go to waste, once again he outplayed the usually strong defence of the opponents with a pass to Skyy Moore and made the defence look old for a second time in a row.
Jalen Hurts answers
But the story of the game was not yet told.
Jalen Hurts also continued to operate at quite a high level, directing, directing. And completed his play over 75 yards with a rush into the end zone. His third rushing touchdown, with the 2-point conversion, the Eagles evened the score at 35:35.
Mahomes and Co. completely exhausted the final drive, were close to the end zone, but let the clock run out almost completely. With eight seconds left, Butker converted the decisive field goal. There was no reply from the Eagles.
James Bradberry, who was the Eagles’ unlucky player with an unnecessary holding, surprisingly admitted the foul after the game: “It was a hold. I pulled on his jersey. I was hoping they would let it go. “
Hurts motivated by defeat
“We lost. We came here to win but lost out. I know I’ll be motivated by this defeat,” said a dejected Hurts at the post-match press conference.
For Mahomes and the Chiefs, the mood was correspondingly better: “We won again. But we are far from finished. It’s a tough road to a dynasty. We will continue to fight. We have some young players in this team. I’m already looking forward to next season. “
