Myles Garrett will be hunting down quarterbacks for the Los Angeles Rams in the future. But as he reveals, keeping his No. 95 jersey will take more than just persuasion.
A lot will change for Myles Garrett in the new NFL season. Following his trade from the Cleveland Browns to the Los Angeles Rams, the 2017 draft’s first overall pick will now wear blue and yellow instead of brown, orange, and white, play in the NFC instead of the AFC, and be part of a true contender rather than a team for which even making the playoffs would be a surprise.
One thing remains the same for Garrett, however: jersey number 95. The two-time Defensive Player of the Year personally made sure of that. Last season, his future D-line teammate Poona Ford wore that number combination.
At his introductory press conference, Garrett was asked how the two had worked it out. His answer, according to “NBC”: “Just a conversation. It didn’t take much.”
But the quarterback hunter couldn’t get away that easily. Head Coach Sean McVay also pricked up his ears at that moment and followed up in true journalist fashion: “A conversation and a few dollars?”
He was spot on, as Garrett had to admit. “Maybe more than a few, but he was up for it,” emphasized the 30-year-old, who now has his first realistic shot at the Super Bowl this season.
Garrett to wear No. 95 with the Rams as well: Trade involves four players
As soon as he knew the trade would go through, he realized he’d have to contact Ford, Garrett added. He added: “I was aware that there had already been a few number changes before me. He understood, and I’m glad I get to keep number 95.”
At the same time, he set off a major number shuffle on the Rams’ roster. Ford now wears number 97—just as he did during his time with the Seattle Seahawks. That number, in turn, was actually intended for Bill Norton to start his NFL career with; the undrafted D-liner signed to a contract will instead take 93, which was previously worn by Payton Zdroik, another undrafted rookie. Zdroik is leaving the 90s and will wear number 62 from now on.
It remains unclear whether any money changed hands in these trades. In any case, Garrett should be able to absorb the “few extra dollars” that the Rams’ number 95 cost him. After all, he’s playing under a four-year contract worth $160 million.
