Munich – In the Sunday Night Football Game, the Kansas City Chiefs have come out on top against the Los Angeles Chargers. Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Co. had a narrow 30:27 victory against their direct AFC West rivals.
The first quarter was already marked by many points. Harrison Butker gave the Chiefs the lead with a 33-yard field goal. Afterwards, the Chargers also got on the scoreboard: Quarterback Justin Herbert found wide receiver Joshua Palmer with a fantastic 50-yard touchdown pass. Then it was Butker again with a 52-yard field goal to cut it to 6-7 before Chargers kicker Cameron Dicker returned a 46-yard kick to make it 10-6.
Decision in the fourth quarter
The second quarter was also a high-scoring affair. First tight end Kelce gave the Chiefs the lead with a touchdown. Then it was running back Austin Ekeler who put Los Angeles back in front with a 1-yard rush for a touchdown. Before the break, Dicker increased the lead to 20:13 with another field goal.
After the break, only Butker’s field goal gave the Chiefs points. In the fourth quarter everything would be decided – and it was Travis Kelce’s hour.
Kelce becomes matchwinner
The star tight end gave Kansas the lead again at 23:20 after a 32-yard pass from Mahomes. But after the Two Minute Warning, the Chargers also got into the end zone once more: Herbert found his go-to guy again in Palmer, who freaked out the fans in Los Angeles.
But many had done the math without Kelce. With 31 seconds left, Mahomes again found the tight end, who converted the 17-yard pass into a touchdown to give the Chiefs the win. Kelce became the match-winner with three touchdowns.
The Chiefs now have a clear lead in the division with a record of 8-2, ahead of the Chargers with a record of 5-5. The Las Vegas Raiders and the Denver Broncos (both 3-7) are ranked third and fourth respectively.
