Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City give the Pittsburgh Steelers no chance in the fifth Wild Card game of the season. After a weak first quarter, the Chiefs’ offense really gets going and provides highlights.
Munich/Kansas City – Led by an outstanding Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs gave the Pittsburgh Steelers no chance in a 42-21 win. The superstar quarterback finished with 404 yards and five touchdowns thrown. Ben Roethlisberger had 215 yards and two touchdowns in what could be his last NFL game.
Both teams did not start well in the game. Eight of the nine first drives ended with a punt. In addition, Patrick Mahomes threw an interception in the first quarter, which the Steelers did not convert into points. The first quarter ended without any points.
A fumble return touchdown by T.J. Watt put the Steelers in front 7:0. It was apparently just the motivation the Chiefs and especially Mahomes needed. The 26-year-old QB finished the next three drives with touchdown passes to Jerick McKinnon, Byron Pringle and Travis Kelce. They went into halftime with a 21-7 lead.
Kansas City without mercy
Same picture in the second half. Mahomes served offensive lineman Nick Allegretti, who extended the lead. After a fumble by Steelers rookie Najee Harris, his first ever in the NFL, Mahomes threw his fifth touchdown pass. Tyreek Hill eluded his defender and caught a 31-yard bomb from his quarterback.
But the Steelers were not yet willing to surrender. Roethlisberger teamed up with Diontae Johnson to cut the lead to 14:34, but the score would not last long. After a direct snap, Travis Kelce threw the first tochdown of his career when he was able to find Byron Pringle in the end zone.
In the final phase Pittsburgh did some cosmetic work. “Big Ben” scored what might have been his last career TD. The receiver of his pass was wide receiver James Washington.
In the Divisional Playoffs Kansas City will play the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night.
