NFL Draft 2026: New England Patriots apparently make important quarterback decision

The New England Patriots are keeping all their options open at the quarterback position. Head of personnel Eliot Wolf is fueling the latest rumors.

With Drake Maye, the New England Patriots seem to be set at the quarterback position for the time being.

However, the franchise seems to want to invest another draft pick there, as “NBC Sports”  reports.

Because the Pats currently have two quarterbacks on the roster. That number is expected to grow to at least three by the start of the season. Tommy DeVito was promoted alongside Maye a few weeks ago. He signed a two-year contract.

In return, Josh Dobbs was released. Accordingly, improvements could be made in the 2026 draft.

New England Patriots watch quarterbacks

Player Personnel Vice President Eliot Wolf: “We’ve looked at all the quarterbacks. And we’re continuing to do that. We’re also looking at some options among the pros. The decision was less about Josh specifically and more about the development and growth we’ve seen in Tommy DeVito over the past year in his sessions in practice.“

Further: ”He’s been a great backup to Drake, as has Josh, by the way. We’ll continue to evaluate the position, whether it’s through the draft, a pro free agent, an undrafted free agent out of college or some other avenue.”

Interesting fact: Wolf more or less read a transcript that was included by the team at the press conference there.

DeVito’s two-year contract is worth $4.4 million. An extremely favorable solution in the quarterback market. Especially since Drake Maye is entering the third year of his rookie contract. A quarterback selected in the late rounds of the draft would be even cheaper financially than DeVito or Maye.

Most teams work with a total of four playmakers on the roster during the offseason and into training camp. The key question, therefore, may not be until late August whether the Patriots ultimately go with two or three quarterbacks for the final 53-man roster.
