The NFL has planned an initiative to more strongly promote diversity and thus teams must hire at least one “diverse” offensive assistant in the coming season. To that end, an outside committee has been formed to examine diversity within the league.
Munich/New York – The NFL has responded to ongoing criticism regarding a lack of diversity and variety in the league’s and teams’ personnel policies by forming an independent, external committee of experts to review league and team policies regarding a lack of diversity in hiring, “NFL.com” reports.
The six-member committee is to provide its external perspective on the league’s diversity status and propose and evaluate initiatives and strategies to improve inclusion and diversity in the league’s and teams’ hiring processes.
Upon completion of the review, the experts shall present comprehensive recommendations to the league office and team owners.
Commissioner Goodell welcomes the development
Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement, “We still have much work to do, but the committee’s work will help us become a more diverse league. We look forward to their recommendations and will increase our efforts to deliver tangible results quickly.”
In addition to the formation of the committee, the league announced an initiative requiring teams to hire an offensive assistant, each of whom is a minority, as reported by Ari Meirov of “pff.com.”
Beginning this season, all 32 teams will employ a diverse person to serve as an offensive assistant. This person will work closely with the HC and offensive staff to gain experience.
With many HC hires being on the offensive side, league believes this could help in the future.

The 32 NFL teams welcomed this move in a joint statement and confirmed to pay more attention to diversity in hiring processes.
Commissioner Goodell had already announced on the last Super Bowl weekend that the league would now increasingly promote diversity and would commission external experts to examine the current situation.
