For a long time, there had been speculation that Travis Hunter would no longer be used on both sides of the ball. Now, the Jaguars coach has addressed the rumors.
Recently, there have been recurring rumors that the Jacksonville Jaguars plan to use Travis Hunter primarily at cornerback and only occasionally as a wide receiver.
“They plan to use him as a full-time cornerback and part-time receiver,” NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported just a few weeks ago.
Now, Jaguars coach Liam Coen has spoken out, revealing that the 22-year-old will continue to be used as a two-way player.
Travis Hunter will continue to play cornerback and receiver
Coen said in a video posted on the franchise’s social media channels: “The plan hasn’t changed at all. He’ll play on both sides of the ball, exactly as we drafted him. We still have the same vision for him in terms of giving him those opportunities.”
He continued: “Now it’s a day-to-day matter of how he’s progressing in his rehab process. But the plan to use him on both sides of the ball as often as possible has remained absolutely unchanged.”

Coen also explained that the departure of cornerback Greg Newsome II has no direct impact on Hunter’s position: “I think people naturally see that Greg Newsome II is gone and that a gap has opened up where you can just slot him in. But I’d love it if he played as much as possible on both sides of the ball.”
Even without Hunter: Jaguars have a surprisingly strong season
Hunter was selected second overall in the 2025 draft—the Jaguars traded up from the fifth pick specifically to acquire the top talent from Colorado. In his rookie season, he logged 324 snaps on offense and 162 on defense before suffering a torn lateral ligament, ending his season after seven games.
However, Jacksonville had a surprisingly strong year even without Hunter and finished the regular season with a 13-4 record, after the numbers had been exactly the opposite the previous season (4-13).
In their first playoff game, however, the team led by quarterback Trevor Lawrence fell just short against the Buffalo Bills (24-27). It remains to be seen whether the franchise will perform just as well or even better next season with Travis Hunter on the roster.
The 22-year-old’s return is likely to be eagerly anticipated, especially on defense: Last season, the franchise allowed the eighth-most points in the league.
