Super Bowl 2024: Kansas City Chiefs beat San Francisco 49ers in overtime

In only the second overtime in Super Bowl history, the Chiefs win dramatically against the 49ers. Mecole Hardman grabs the decisive touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes

As the corniest of NFL seasons came to a Hollywood-esque end, Taylor Swift danced wildly through her VIP box.

Down below, on the lawn of Las Vegals’ two-billion-dollar spaceship Allegiant Stadium, the red and yellow confetti swirled around the Super Bowl heroes of the Kansas City Chiefs.

It was the perfect fusion of sport, glamor and pop culture – an incredible stroke of luck for the National Football League.

“This means everything to me. This is legendary,” exclaimed star quarterback Patrick Mahomes after the spectacular 25:22 n.V. against the San Francisco 49ers. “I’m so proud of my guys. We’re going to celebrate tonight, we’re going to celebrate at home – and this is far from the end.”

Taylor Swift and her boyfriend Travis Kelce, who sang “Viva Las Vegas”, fell into each other’s arms in tears.

The 58th Super Bowl electrified America even more than usual. The pop world star Swift had opened up a new audience of millions for the entertainment giant NFL – more female, younger, with enormous social media expertise.

Everyone was looking forward to the highlight of the year on Interstate 15, in the world-famous neighborhood of the Bellagio, the MGM Grand and the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. They were not disappointed.

Fittingly, the world’s biggest sporting spectacle started with virtually nothing happening.

49ers star Christian McCaffrey dropped the ball while running, the quarterbacks traded a few short drives with few passes but plenty of penalties.

Without the iconic ad, which cost seven million dollars for 30 seconds and featured a hilarious spot from Paramount+ (starring Star Trek idol Patrick Stewart and cartoon pig Peppa Pig), it would have been almost boring

Butker

Kicker Jake Moody then kicked the longest field goal in Super Bowl history (55 yards) for the 49ers, and things got off to a slow start.

Mahomes threw a sensational deep pass to Mecole Hardman that would decide the game in overtime, but on the following play, running back Isiah Pacheco fumbled the ball

And Kelce? He suddenly started snarling at Andy Reid and even bumped into his coach. An extremely unusual moment – just like the terrible Achilles tendon rupture suffered by 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw during a bounce on the sideline.

In the end, neither Mahomes nor his counterpart, “Mister Irrelevant” Brock Purdy, threw the first touchdown, but a wide receiver. Jauan Jennings crowned a wild trick play with his pass to McCaffrey.

Mahomes leads the comeback

But no one in football would make the mistake of writing Mahomes off. The now three-time champion wanted to counter, but he threw a bitter interception immediately after Usher’s mediocre halftime show

The Chiefs’ offense just couldn’t get going, but at least Harrison Butker improved Moody’s record by two yards. Then the 49ers helped themselves with a fumble and a 16-yard pass from Mahomes to Marquez Valdes-Scantling gave the Chiefs their first lead of the game.

Jauan Jennings then carried the ball into the end zone himself and the game went back and forth. Taylor Swift was biting her fingernails. And she cheered at the end of the longest Super Bowl in history.

Taylor Swift favorite of the bettors

In the desert paradise of gamblers and gamblers, Swift was also the favorite of bettors.

Gamblers could bet on what color lipstick the music idol would put on (red, of course), how many Swift inserts there would be during the national anthem (none!) – and whether Travis Kelce would get down on one knee on the field to propose (thankfully no, the internet would have imploded).

However, nobody had bet that Swift would drink a beer on ex and slam the empty cup on the table while cheering in the box. The Chiefs’ victory was more likely
