Two Rushing Touchdowns! Garoppolo leads 49ers to victory in Chicago

The San Francisco 49ers win a thrilling game in Chicago because Jimmy Garoppolo finds his way into the end zone twice. Bears quarterback Justin Fields is also impressive.

Munich/Chicago – Thanks to quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, the San Francisco 49ers won 33-22 in Chicago and now stand at a record of 3-4, for the Bears it was the fifth loss in three wins.

“Jimmy G” was denied a passing touchdown, but Garoppolo ran into the end zone twice himself. The 29-year-old passer threw for 322 yards and went without an interception.

Bears quarterback Justin Fields also performed well, scoring one passing and one rushing touchdown, amassing 175 passing yards, but then throwing an interception on a risky pass just before the end.

Deebo Samuel with strong performance

Running back Eli Mitchell’s numbers were also noteworthy, with the 49ers rookie running for 137 yards and a touchdown. In doing so, he passed Ricky Watters (397 in the 1992 season) as the 49ers running back with the most yards in the first five games of his career.

49ers receiver Deebo Samuel also had a strong game, totaling 171 receiving yards. Samuel is now only the third 49ers receiver ever since 1970 to record at least 50 receiving yards in each of the first seven games. The other two: Jerry Rice (1996, 1986) and Dwight Clark (1982).

Slye misses first field goal

The first chance to score came from 49ers kicker Joey Slye. But the 25-year-old put the egg to the right of the upright from 48 yards. His Bears counterpart Cairo Santos did better, putting the first points on the scoreboard from 39 yards.

A little later, Slye was also more precise and scored from 48 yards to make it 3-3. There were no further points in the first quarter, neither the passing nor the running game of both teams really got going at this point.

Justin Fields and Jesse James set up the first touchdown

That changed in the second quarter. Fields found tight end Jesse James for 8 yards for the first touchdown of the game, Santos added the extra point. Garoppolo could not counter this, it was only enough for another field goal by Slye, this time from 52 yards.

Santos then kicked another field goal from 40 yards out to make it 13-6 before things got tense in front of the Bears end zone. Receiver Samuel picked off a 50-yard pass from Garoppolo at the 4-yard line and the quarterback spiked the ball to stop the clock at seven seconds. But another pass attempt to Samuel didn’t go in, so it was up to kicker Slye again to make it 13-9 at halftime.

Garoppolo with two rushing touchdowns

After the break it looked as if the kickers would continue to dominate. Santos converted the next field goal for the Bears before the 49ers scored their first touchdown. Samuel again picked up a long ball just before the end zone, and Garoppolo finally carried the ball over the line himself. Bitter: Slye missed the extra point, the Bears remained ahead 16:15.

But the 49ers were now running hot, running back Mitchell heaved the ball into the end zone at the start of the last quarter, receiver Brandon Aiyuk caught the two-point conversion. But the Bears answered right back, quarterback Field ran 22 yards for a touchdown. But since Bears kicker Santos’ nerves were shaking and he missed the extra point, the 49ers remained in the lead with 23:22.

Garoppolo extended the lead a little later with his second rushing touchdown of the day, this time scored by Slye. The kicker then made it 33-22 with another field goal with just under two minutes to go in a competitive game.
