Drew Lock with Seattle Seahawks: Uncertain future after Wilson trade

The Denver Broncos’ trade for star quarterback Russell Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks is causing a stir. For quarterback Drew Lock, it’s the other way to Seattle and an uncertain future as part of the deal.

Munich/Seattle – The monster trade of the offseason has consequences for Drew Lock.

In return for star quarterback Russell Wilson and a fourth-round pick, the Denver Broncos are sending two first-round picks, two second-round picks and three players to the Seattle Seahawks. In addition to tight end Noah Fant and defensive lineman Shelby Harris, Lock as well.

For the quarterback, this ends his brief era in Denver. After the trade hammer was announced, it quickly became clear that the 2019 second-round pick was shocked by the news. Mike Klis of “9NEWS” provided some insight into Lock’s emotional world shortly after the announcement.

“I spoke with Drew Lock. He declined to comment and said he wanted to talk to family members and close friends first to process the trade before speaking publicly. I will say this for Lock: “No Broncos player has taken more of a beating in the last two years, but he has always been professional with the press,” Klis tweeted.

Once the emotions have settled after the shock, the player won’t be the only one who will have to take a close look at what opportunities await him on the new team.

Drew Lock: Long-term quarterback or stopgap in Seattle?

First, the positive after the trade: Lock comes to Seattle as the current number one.

The franchise already signed Jacob Eason as a young backup after his release from the Indianapolis Colts last season. However, it has not been enough for a stint with the “Hawks” so far.

Meanwhile, Geno Smith, who has been Wilson’s backup since 2019, is no longer on the roster of the 2013 Super Bowl winner after his contract expired.

So far, so good. So on paper, Lock is the potential Wilson successor. The key word here, though, is potential.

Seattle Seahawks: Drew Lock is probably not the saviour

For the majority of the US media, Lock is not expected to be a long-term starter for the Seahawks or even the franchise’s rebuild hope.

The Seattle Times reports that Lock could become a bridge quarterback for the Seahawks, or that the franchise could even use all the picks it received to sign an experienced quarterback. There is also the possibility of using one of the acquired picks in the draft for a new playmaker.

Lock hasn’t made many strong athletic arguments so far.

He posted an 8-13 record in 21 starts for the Broncos thus far, going 0-3 in games as a starter in 2021, posting a 60.4 percent completion percentage overall in six appearances for 787 passing yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

In the 2020 season, his only full season as a regular starter, Lock posted a 4-9 record and threw 16 touchdown passes and 15 interceptions while completing just 57.3 percent of his pass attempts.

Lock’s stats so far underpin concerns about his suitability as a franchise quarterback. They also inevitably raise the question of whether the 25-year-old even has the potential to be a starter. The next few weeks and months will provide answers. Not only for Lock, but also for the Seahawks.
