Despite the U.S. team’s 4-1 victory over Paraguay, two NFL stars have leveled harsh criticism. However, their criticism is not directed at the team, but at the home fans.

In a lopsided victory in the opening match of a home World Cup, the stadium should normally be going wild. However, that didn’t happen during the U.S.’s 4-1 win over Paraguay.

The lack of atmosphere is a thorn in the side of NFL legends Jason and Travis Kelce. On their podcast “New Heights,” they level harsh accusations against the U.S. team’s supporters.

“‘I think we can win’ is arguably the weakest battle cry I’ve ever heard,” recalled former NFL star Jason Kelce, reflecting on a visit to an international match. He wondered, “Why are we even here?”

For the 2018 Super Bowl champion, one thing is clear: “That’s just a crappy chant. It should be, ‘I think we can take you down.’”

Although SoFi Stadium was sold out for the Americans’ opening game, the big party atmosphere was missing. At least that’s how Travis and Jason Kelce see it.

While American fans create a positive and supportive atmosphere, they don’t bring the same energy as fans from countries like Brazil, says Travis, tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Fans have their own opinions

Chants like “USA! USA!” and “I think we can win!” or simply “Go, Team!” lack intensity, creativity, and any bite against the opponents.

Instead, they are very family-friendly and rely more on self-confidence and encouragement rather than intimidation or humor. Interestingly, the Kelce brothers aren’t alone in this opinion.

American fans see it similarly. On the platform X, one user writes: “Our European friends are absolutely crushing us with their chants, cheers, and songs.”

Another comments: “We need a broader repertoire. ‘Sweet Caroline’ and ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ are great, but they’re not enough.”

On Friday, the U.S. plays Australia at 9:00 p.m. Perhaps the American fans can still create a rousing atmosphere and pull off a surprise after all. And satisfy the Kelce brothers, too.
