On a game day full of surprises, the Jacksonville Jaguars downed the Buffalo Bills. The Dallas Cowboys also went down to defeat against Denver, meanwhile the Browns are unfazed by the turnover theatre surrounding Odell Beckham Jr. The 7 p.m. NFL games at a glance.
Cleveland Browns at Cincinnati Bengals 41:16
The change of receiver Odell Beckham Jr. seems to have disturbed the Cleveland Browns only a little. In the divisional duel with the Cincinnati Bengals, the team led by head coach Kevin Stefanski celebrated a surprising 41:16 victory and thus returned to the playoff race in the AFC.
The Browns benefited from a veritable festival of mistakes by the Bengals. Quarterback Joe Burrow made two interceptions, the first of which was a 99-yard pick-six by Cleveland cornerback Denzel Ward. Receiver Ja’Marr Chase also committed a fumble, but the bottom line was that Cincinnati was surprisingly weak and was never in a position to seriously fight for a win.
Cleveland’s running back Nick Chubb stood out with 137 yards and two touchdowns. His 70-yard touchdown run in the middle of the third quarter, which increased the score to 31:10, put the lid on the game. Baker Mayfield also impressed with 218 passing yards and two touchdowns.
The Browns now stand at a 5-4 record, as do the Bengals.
Denver Broncos at Dallas Cowboys 30:16
Denver Broncos pulled off a surprising 30-16 win at Dallas Cowboys thanks to a focused performance. Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater had a good day with 249 yards and a touchdown, but it was a different story for his counterpart Dak Prescott.
After recovering from a calf injury, the 28-year-old was unable to match his performance from the early part of the season for a long time. In the end Prescott threw for 232 yards, but a large part of it came after the game had already been decided and the otherwise strong Broncos defence had to take it out of gear.
Denver didn’t give the Cowboys a chance, already leading 16-0 at the break. When Dallas blocked a punt shortly after halftime, there was hope, but in a curious twist, Denver kept the ball because a Cowboys player touched the ball but sent it back into the arms of Broncos defender Jason Griffith.
It was a situation that matched the Cowboys’ disappointing day.
While the Cowboys conceded their second loss of the season, Denver continued their small surge and stand at a 5-4 record after their second win in a row.
Minnesota Vikings at Baltimore Ravens 31:34
The city of Baltimore does not remain a good place for the Minnesota Vikings. After the dramatic 31:34 loss, the franchise now stands at a 1-12 record in games at the Ravens and former Baltimore Colts respectively.
The crowd was treated to a spectacular game that really picked up steam in the second half. At one point the Vikings were already leading by 14 points – but the Ravens came back late and even took the lead three minutes before the end.
A pass from Kirk Cousins to Adam Thielen one minute before the end brought the game into overtime at 31:31, in which it also went up and down. In the end, Ravens kicker Justin Tucker did not allow himself to be robbed of the victory and put the ball between the uprights from 36 yards out.
Lamar Jackson, in addition to 266 passing yards and three touchdowns (with two interceptions), was most impressive as a runner, recording 120 yards on the ground.
Kirk Cousins threw for 187 yards and two touchdowns, running back Dalvin Cook came up with 122 total yards.
The win pushes the Ravens’ record to 6-2, maintaining their commanding lead in the AFC North.
Buffalo Bills at Jacksonville Jaguars 6:9
Shocker in Jacksonville! In the biggest upset of the current NFL season, the Jacksonville Jaguars sensationally beat the Buffalo Bills.
In a field goal festival, Head Coach Urban Meyer’s team prevailed 9-6 to celebrate the first real statement win in the Trevor Lawrence era.
Both teams struggled to create anything from their own offence throughout the game. Instead, field goal attempt after field goal attempt dominated the picture. The highlight of the first half? 20 seconds before the end of the second quarter, Jaguars linebacker Josh Allen sacked Bills quarterback Josh Allen.
And it got even better: In the third quarter, the Bills’ Josh Allen made an interception. The ball sailed right into the arms of? Josh Allen of the Jaguars. A short time later, Allen even managed a fumble.
In the meantime, the Jaguars had to fear for Trevor Lawrence. The rookie went down shortly before the end of the first half and injured his right ankle. After the break, however, the quarterback returned to the field.
In the closing stages, the Bills got into another promising field situation, but on their fourth try, the Jaguars’ defence held firm and secured the upset.
Atlanta Falcons at New Orleans Saints 27:25
In a spectacular final period, the Atlanta Falcons secured a dramatic 27:25 victory at the New Orleans Saints. Both teams scored in the closing minutes, but it was Falcons kicker Younghoe Koo who had the final say, converting a 29-yard field goal as the clock expired.
Earlier, a 64-yard pass from Matt Ryan to all-purpose weapon Cordarrelle Patterson had silenced cheering Saints fans, putting kicker Koo in a comfortable situation.
Atlanta once again made it unnecessarily tense – Ryan & Co. led 24-6 at one point, but then conceded three Saints touchdowns in a row. Quarterback Trevor Siemian showed again with 249 yards and two touchdowns that he is more than just an alternative for the injured Jameis Winston and almost led his team to a comeback victory.
Matt Ryan threw for 343 yards and two touchdowns and became the match-winner in a virtually non-existent running game (34 yards). The Saints now stand at a 5-3 record, the Falcons can get their playoff hopes back after winning their third game in their last four and stand at a 4-4 record.
Las Vegas Raiders at New York Giants 16:23
After a turbulent week, the Las Vegas Raiders have also suffered a sporting setback. The team led by interim head coach Rich Bisaccia was surprisingly defeated by the New York Giants with 16:23.
After a turbulent game in which the game went back and forth, the Raiders had a chance to equalise seconds before the end. But a fumble by quarterback Derek Carr at New York’s 13-yard line sealed the defeat.
In total Las Vegas recorded 403 total yards, New York only 245, but the Giants could rely mainly on their defence, which always recorded important stops and paved the way to victory with a 41-yard pick-six by Xavier McKinney. Daniel Jones threw a touchdown for a total of 110 yards.
Derek Carr had two interceptions as well as the fumble and had a mixed day. The Raiders now stand at a 5-3 record, the Giants celebrated their third win of the season (3-6) with the surprise victory.
Houston Texans at Miami Dolphins 9:17
For the first time in NFL history, two teams with a 1-7 record faced off at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. Not surprisingly, the duel between the Dolphins and the Houston Texans was no football treat.
In total, both teams committed a whopping nine turnovers and were very unthreatening offensively, especially in the second half.
In the end, the Dolphins prevailed in front of their home crowd, winning 17-9. Quarterback Jacoby Brissett threw for 244 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
Texans quarterback Tyrod Taylor, who was back on the field for the first time since Week 2 after recovering from injury, had a terrible day and threw three interceptions. This was one of the reasons why Houston was left without a chance and will now probably have to compete with the Detroit Lions for the top pick in the next draft.
