Tuesday is the deadline! By then, the 32 NFL teams must have cut their rosters to 53 players.
The preseason is over, the regular season is getting closer and closer. Before the opening game between the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens, a big task awaits the teams: the roster cut is coming up.
This means that all 32 franchises have to cut their current squads of around 90 players down to 53. This is a mental and sporting challenge for many professionals, as the NFL season has reached a dead end for them before it has even really begun.
More than 1,000 players have been dropped from the squads and are hoping for a chance or a place on the practice squad elsewhere.
“You can still put yourself in their shoes. Because you’ve been where they’ve been. You know the pain, every single morning, barely able to get out of bed. I understand their situation and I know what they’re thinking,” said head coach Dan Campbell of the Detroit Lions, where wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown’s place as the top pass receiver is, of course, secure.
In any case, Campbell and the other coaches will be having a lot of honest, but also uncomfortable, conversations in the coming days. The squads must be finalized by Tuesday evening at 10 p.m. CEST.
