Jason Kelce, centre of the Philadelphia Eagles, tells the podcast “New Heights” about his conversation with Andy Reid at the NFL Draft. The five-time Pro Bowler apparently did a limited job of listening to the Eagles head coach at the time.
Munich – The NFL Draft means pure tension for the participating players. Especially the redemptive call of a team is usually particularly poignant.
This is also the case for Eagles centre Jason Kelce, who talks about his conversation with Andy Reid in his podcast “New Heights”. Apparently, with all the excitement, he could remember little at the time.
“I knew I was only a third-day candidate and wouldn’t be picked until the fourth round,” the now 35-year-old admitted. Moreover, the brother of tight end Travis Kelce knew that he would only have a chance with three teams: the Kansas City Chiefs, the St. Louis Rams (now the Los Angeles Rams) and the Philadelphia Eagles.
Then, when the Chiefs selected centre Rodney Hudson in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft, Kelce’s hopes began to fade.
In round six, however, the Eagles had two picks in a row, and suddenly a number lit up on the centre’s mobile phone. When he answered the call, Andy Reid, the Eagles’ head coach at the time, was on the phone.
Reid asks Kelce, “How are you feeling? “
The latter gave him the nod for his NFL career, explaining, “Here’s what’s going to happen now: I’m going to pass the phone to our general manager Howie Roseman, then you’re going to talk to offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinwig, and finally assistant coach Howard Mudd. Then we’ll draft you. How do you feel?”
Kelce emotionally replied, “Damn coach, I’m very excited. “You could tell when Reid asked him if he understood everything. The brother of the Chiefs’ star tight end suddenly panicked: “Ummmm, honestly, I don’t remember anything you just said.”
Reid then said sarcastically, “Hey kid, you’re going to play football in front of 75,000 people. It should be pretty obvious that you can concentrate on the phone.” Kelce finished by justifying himself, blaming his impaired ability to concentrate on emotions, “My dad’s crying in front of me right now and I don’t know what to say. “
Kelce: Brothers still tied in internal duel
Consequences of the short attention span obviously did not. To this day, the centre serves the Philadelphia Eagles. So far he has been able to get a Super Bowl victory there – just as many as his brother Travis with the Chiefs.
But in the current season, the Eagles are on a real run with an 11-1 record. They still have centre Kelce, who hasn’t been nervous in important situations for a long time.
