Sunday Night Football: Kansas City Chiefs beat Tennessee Titans in overtime thanks to Patrick Mahomes

The Kansas City Chiefs have prevailed 20-17 in overtime over the Tennessee Titans in the Sunday Night Football Game.

Munich – The Kansas City Chiefs have won 20-17 in overtime against the Tennessee Titans in the Sunday Night Football Game.

The top game between the teams, who both entered the game with a record of 5-2, got off to a bit of a slow start. In the first quarter, it was only Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker who got three points on the scoreboard with a field goal.

Henry going it alone

The second quarter was a high-scoring affair. First the Chiefs increased their lead to 9:0 when star quarterback Patrick Mahomes served his receiver Mecole Hardman for a touchdown. Then the Titans also found their way into the game in the person of running back Derrick Henry. He alone turned the game in Tennessee’s favour with two rushing touchdowns before the break.

Kansas, on the other hand, gave up much of the running game, which the Titans used to put more and more pressure on Mahomes in the pocket. So the Chiefs didn’t score a single point in the third quarter – the Titans went up 17-9 on Randy Bullock’s 44-yard field goal.

Mahomes’ hour has come

But then came the hour of Mahomes, who ran for a touchdown late in the game and the subsequent two-point conversion to send his Chiefs into overtime.

In the overtime Butker put Kansas on the winning track with a field goal. Tennessee’s rookie quarterback Malik Willis was unable to convert the Titans’ decisive drive into points. He was sacked twice and his pass on the final attempt was also incomplete.

Mahomes with 446 passing yards

This was the Titans’ third loss, but they still sit atop the AFC South with a 3-5 record. The Chiefs continued to pull away in the AFC West with the win and are 6-2.

Mahomes totalled 446 passing yards in the game against Tennessee – he was even Kansas’ best rusher with 63 rushing yards. For the Titans, Henry had 115 rushing yards and capped his performance with two touchdowns.
