Broncos linebacker Jonathon Cooper is facing charges in court. The pass rusher is accused of domestic violence.
Negative headlines from the world’s top football league.
On Thursday evening, Jonathon Cooper, a pass rusher for the Denver Broncos, was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence and property damage. This is according to arrest records from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the records, the linebacker was arrested at 11:16 p.m. local time by officers from the Parker Police Department in Denver and transferred to the Douglas County Jail a little over three hours later.
Cooper appeared in court on Friday morning and was released on bail following a hearing. His next court date is scheduled for next Monday.
Girlfriend also arrested by police
Notably: According to the “Denver Post,” Cooper’s long-time girlfriend was also arrested late Thursday evening; she, too, faces charges of domestic violence and property damage.
According to an affidavit, the girlfriend accused Cooper of cheating on her, which allegedly led to an argument. The woman stated that she took his cell phone and threw it across the room.
The athlete, in turn, testified that he grabbed his girlfriend by the upper arms to get his cell phone. When she reached for his phone again, he said he “pressed his neck against hers to prevent her from getting it.”
The Denver Broncos and the NFL stated in releases that they were “aware of the matter.”
Cooper Shines on the Broncos’ Defense
Cooper was drafted by the Broncos in the seventh round in 2021 and has since developed into one of the team’s best edge rushers. He has started in 65 of 81 regular-season games.
Along with Pro Bowler Nik Bonitto and 2024 Defensive Player of the Year Patrick Surtain II, Cooper is one of the stars of the Broncos’ defense, which shone brightly last season.
In 2024, he signed a four-year, $54 million contract extension.
