Kenyon Sadiq is drafted by the New York Jets and immediately causes a viral moment. The rookie feared a prank call.
Last year’s nasty fake phone call to Shedeur Sanders has apparently left the NFL scene permanently unsettled. This year’s first-round pick of the New York Jets, Kenyon Sadiq, initially feared a prank when he was picked 16th overall.
“I’m excited, coach,” the new hopeful said during the phone call to his new coach Aaron Glenn, which he received from the Jets’ draft room and was videotaped by the team and shared via social media.
“I thought it might be a prank call,” he shared, a bit perplexed.
Unlike Sanders, who was actually tricked the previous year, Sadiq didn’t have a rude awakening. “No, we’re not playing a prank, bro. You’re going to be a jet. You’ve been a target for us for some time,” the coach made clear.
On Saturday morning, Sadiq was asked about the curious incident during the press conference.
Sadiq: “It was a moment full of emotion”
On Saturday morning, Sadiq was asked about the curious incident during the press conference. “It was just my biggest fear, with Shedeur and all the stuff that happened with him,” he admitted.
“It was a moment full of emotions. It wouldn’t be fun to get a prank call,“ he continued, though he was quick to note that the call was indeed real.
”I was in reality when I started talking to every coach and management. I realized, ‘This isn’t a prank call, this is a real deal,’ and I was super excited,” he recalled of the special moment.
Sadiq most recently played three seasons at Oregon, recording 51 receptions for 560 yards and eight touchdowns last college season. None of his touchdowns, however, made him as recognizable as his viral moment after the draft.
Sanders badly mauled the previous year
In the previous year’s draft, Sanders, who had been drafted in the first round, had a nasty game. He had to wait until the fifth round to be selected by the Cleveland Browns.
During the long wait, he received a fake call from Jax Ulbrich, the then 21-year-old son of Falcons defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich. He made Sanders believe that he had been drafted, but this was not true. The Falcons and Jax Ulbrich had to pay a fine.
