NFL – Baltimore Ravens: Lamar Jackson Faces a Fresh Start – “I’m Being Pushed to My Limits”

The Baltimore Ravens are undergoing a major overhaul. Lamar Jackson must adjust to a completely new offensive system—and describes it as one of the biggest challenges of his NFL career. While a fresh start is underway on the field, a key question about the team’s future remains unanswered.

A new era is beginning for Lamar Jackson with the Baltimore Ravens. With Declan Doyle, the quarterback has a new offensive coordinator—and must adjust to a system that differs significantly from anything he has experienced in the NFL so far.

Although Jackson has already experienced several changes in the offensive coordinator position during his career, he emphasized that this transition is much more significant.

While in the past at least parts of the game philosophy, concepts, or terminology were carried over, that is not the case now.

Lamar Jackson: “Virtually nothing from the old system was carried over”

“I’m being challenged right now,” Jackson told “The Baltimore Banner.” “It’s a new system with a completely new language. Practically nothing was carried over from the old system.”

Doyle, who worked on Ben Johnson’s coaching staff with the Chicago Bears last season, is apparently bringing numerous new ideas to Baltimore. Wide receiver Zay Flowers even stated that he had never seen some of the concepts before.

Jackson on his relationship with Doyle: “We complement each other”

The tone of communication is also different for Jackson from what he was used to. Doyle is very direct with his quarterback and can get loud at times.

“I’m a player who’s open to being coached,” Jackson said. “Sometimes he sees things I don’t see. Sometimes I see things he might not have thought of. That’s great. We complement each other.”

Lamar Jackson: Unrest over contract extension

After a disappointing season, the Ravens hope to get back on track with the new coaching staff. In 2025, Jackson threw 21 touchdown passes and seven interceptions, finishing with a 6-7 record—the first time in his career he’s had a losing record. Additionally, his 349 rushing yards were the lowest total of his NFL career.

While much is changing on the field, one important matter remains unresolved: Although Jackson is under contract through 2027, talks about another extension have so far stalled.

As was the case in 2023, this is causing unrest in Baltimore. Back then, the contract saga dragged on for several months, including a trade request from Jackson. The team aims to prevent that from happening this time.
