In July, former NFL star Tony Romo was briefly arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. He is now facing the consequences and is stepping back from his role as a “CBS” analyst for the time being.

Former NFL star and current TV analyst Tony Romo has taken action following his alleged DUI in July and is stepping back from his role as an analyst for the U.S. network “CBS” for the time being. The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback announced this in a statement on Instagram.

“This morning, I addressed a recent personal mistake by pleading ‘nolo contendere’ (no contest) to a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence (OWI) in Wisconsin. I take full responsibility for this,” Romo wrote.

In July, he was pulled over by police on Interstate 43 and taken into custody. According to a police report from the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office, he reportedly failed a breathalyzer test and was subsequently processed for identification.

Romo is said to have had “an open bottle of an alcoholic beverage” on the passenger seat while driving when he was pulled over by police. He also drew attention for illegal passing maneuvers, as well as “red, glassy eyes” and the “smell of an intoxicating alcoholic beverage.”

Romo Admits to Alcohol Addiction

Romo has now admitted to suffering from alcohol addiction. “Several back surgeries ended my career earlier than expected and left me with constant, debilitating pain. That pain led to a dependence on painkillers, and my attempts to wean myself off those medications led to an excessive reliance on alcohol,” he explained.

The 46-year-old added: “The past month has been difficult, but it has also been personally meaningful. It has required me to fully confront my mistakes and admit them—to the Lord, to myself, to my family, and now to the public as well.”

Romo emphasized that he is working closely with his doctors “to take care of my health and make the necessary changes.” However, he made it clear that he intends to return to “CBS” “in due time.”
