Newton and the Patriots playbook: Edelman has warned him

A quarterback has to internalize the playbook of his team, i.e. the game system. This also applies to Cam Newton, who has to deal with a particularly complex example in the New England Patriots.

Julian Edelman has warned Cam Newton, told him in advance that it won’t be easy. Nevertheless, the new quarterback of the New England Patriots found it very funny.

Because Newton has to work his way through a playbook in a relatively short period of time, which is quite something. It has the infamous reputation of being very complex. Which Edelman confirmed in a personal conversation.

“We both enjoyed talking on the phone,” Newton said. “Then suddenly he just said, ‘Hey, brother, that’s sh… …Calculus.” Higher math, then.

At the beginning of July Newton had posted a picture of how he worked his way into matter.

But that’s nothing to intimidate the 31-year-old, because on top of that, Offensive Coordinator Josh McDaniels and Quarterback Coach Jedd Fisch also help where they can. Not for nothing did Newton stress how comfortable he already feels.

“At the end of the day, football is still football, and you shouldn’t make more out of it than what it is,” Newton said. “Josh was there every step of the way, as was Jedd. I was thinking about it all the time. All the quarterbacks were trying to learn the whole system.”

Newton has his own methods of internalizing the system.

Different methods.
In the Carolina Panthers he had his own notebook, a folder in which he filed all important things, notes or annotations. Newton is the visual learner type.

“We all have our different ways of learning and different ways of storing as much information as possible,” said Newton, who admitted that there was no Pats folder at the moment, “but some types of storage methods have adapted to New England.

Julian Edelman had warned him.
