NFL – Philadelphia Eagles: Superstar rookie set for position change?

Cooper DeJean impressed as a cornerback in his rookie season. However, the Philadelphia Eagles are currently considering a position change for the youngster.

The Philadelphia Eagles found a gem in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft with the 40th pick. Cornerback Cooper DeJean quickly developed into an important pillar of the defense.

He played in all 20 games of the season, and in the Super Bowl, the 22-year-old contributed an interception that he returned to the end zone for a pick six.

This offseason, the Eagles parted ways with several defensive starters, including James Bradberry, Darius Slay, and C.J. Gardner-Johnson. Partly because of these departures, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is considering a position change for his protégé.

Eagles: DeJean soon to be a safety?

“We would like to continue using him as a nickel cornerback, and when we play without a nickel cornerback, he moves to cornerback or safety. But that also depends on the rest of the team,” Fangio said in a media roundtable.

Fangio sees DeJean’s potential as a good safety and is toying with the idea of playing him there more often. “I think he would play very well at safety. I think it suits his skill set,” said the former Denver Broncos head coach.

DeJean already showed the physicality needed to potentially function as a safety in his rookie season. He was particularly impressive against the run. A position change could make the Eagles’ defense even more unpredictable.
