In a memorable match with several lead changes, the Chiefs beat the Bills in overtime. Quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen play outstandingly, Bills receiver Gabriel Davis makes NFL history.
Kansas City – In a memorable offensive spectacle, the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Buffalo Bills 42-36 in overtime in the NFL Divisional Round.
The two quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen delivered a wild and high-class exchange. Bills receiver Gabriel Davis (201 yards) caught four touchdowns, the most ever in the playoffs in NFL history.
In overtime, the Chiefs got the ball and used their first drive to decide the game when tight end Travis Kelce picked off a Mahomes pass. The Chiefs’ quarterback threw for 378 yards and three touchdowns, and scored another touchdown himself. His counterpart Josh Allen threw for 329 yards and four touchdowns.
The Chiefs will now face the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship Game next Sunday
Singletary runs for first touchdown
The game had started right away with a lot of tempo. The Bills took the lead when running back Devin Singletary ran into the end zone with just under seven minutes played. But Mahomes put his stamp on the game for the first time. The 26-year-old ran for six yards himself and rushed towards the end zone, putting the ball away right at the pylon for six points.
The next Chiefs touchdown in the second quarter was no less spectacular. Hard-pressed, Mahomes threw a close-range pass into the end zone, receiver Byron Pringle also making a sure grab in the scrum.
Butker misses field goal attempt
In return, Bills QB Allen showed his class and led his team quickly down the field. The signal caller found receiver Davis for 18 yards and a touchdown.
There was still time for a Chiefs drive, but kicker Harrison Butker’s 50-yard field-goal attempt three seconds before the break was just wide right of the upright. The score was 14-14 going into halftime.
Butker did better at the start of the third quarter, converting a 39-yard field goal just wide of the right upright to make it 17-14 for the Chiefs. The next points also went to the Chiefs, Mecole Hardman escaped several defenders with a great run and placed the ball next to the pylon. But the extra point was hit by a nervous Butker.
Total madness in the closing stages
The game was now getting more and more spectacular, the Bills answering directly. Allen threw a long pass to Davis, who sprinted 75 yards for his second touchdown and cut the lead to 21:23. The Chiefs answered again with a field goal, this time Butker scored from 28 yards.
But then Allen turned it up a notch. First, the Bills quarterback threw 27 yards to Davis again, then he completed the two-point conversion to Stefon Diggs with great vision. Now the Bills led 29-23, Mahomes and the Chiefs had 1:54 minutes to turn the game around again.
But they didn’t need that long at all. Tyreek Hill sprinted 64 yards into the end zone with time to signal to defenders with his index finger that he was out of bounds.
The Bills answer, the madness continues
Now the Bills needed another touchdown with 62 seconds on the clock. And the madness continued! Allen threw again to Davis, who caught his fourth touchdown. 36:33 for the Bills, now the Chiefs had only 13 seconds to equalise or win the game with a touchdown.
And indeed Mahomes led the Chiefs into field-goal range, of all things the phased unsafe Butker scored the 36:36 for overtime! In the overtime the Chiefs then made short work of the Kelce touchdown and won one of the most spectacular games in the history of the NFL playoffs.
