Aaron Rodgers injured early: New York Jets beat Buffalo Bills

The New York Jets got the win against the Buffalo Bills at the end of the 1st game day. With 22:16 after overtime the Jets got the victory in the division duel. The long-awaited debut of Aaron Rodgers was already over after one pass.

It was arguably the most anticipated game since week one of the 2020 season, when Tom Brady made his debut for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Three years later, Aaron Rodgers also makes his debut for his new team, the New York Jets. But his debut lasted only four plays.

Aaron Rodgers out with Achilles tendon injury

On a sack of linebacker Leonard Floyd, the 39-year-old suffered an injury and was unable to continue playing. With the statistic of 0/1 passes he left the field and last year’s starter Zach Wilson took over again. After the game, it was clear that it appeared to be an Achilles tendon injury.

Wilson did not do a bad job under floodlights and in front of an audience of millions. In the end, he completed 67 percent of his passes (14/21) for 140 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

The Jets tied the game at 13-13 in the final quarter when last year’s Offensive Rookie of the Year Garrett Wilson broke through on a one-on-one matchup in the end zone. The Jets’ leading receiver was Allen Lazard with two catches for 46 yards.

Breece Hall also impressed in his comeback. The running back, who was out for much of last season with a torn cruciate ligament, picked up 127 rushing yards on just ten runs.

Buffalo Bills give the ball away four times

However, the hosts’ defence showed what they are made of. Safety Jordan Whitehead alone intercepted three relatively blind balls thrown by Josh Allen. It was not the day of the former Wyoming Cowboy at all: Although he completed 71 percent of his balls (29/41), he only threw for 236 yards and one touchdown.

Directly after the 13:13 equalisation of the Jets, he also fumbled the ball at his own 25-yard line and thus enabled the Jets to take the late lead. In general, the Bills only managed three points in the 2nd half, which in the end made the preliminary final score 16:16.

There was no sign of the offseason dispute between quarterback and receiver Stefon Diggs. He caught ten of the 13 balls intended for him for 102 yards and a touchdown.

Overtime drama ends in punt return touchdown

In the first overtime of the young season, the Bills won the coin toss and elected to take possession.

However, after two inaccurate balls by Josh Allen and a false start penalty, the Bills dug themselves into a hole. The ensuing short punt by Sam Martin was carried directly into the end zone by returner Xavier Gipson for the win.

Next week, the Bills take on the Las Vegas Raiders, while the Jets travel to the Dallas Cowboys.
