Dak Prescott is likely to be under special scrutiny in the coming season. The Dallas Cowboys quarterback finished last season – despite a lengthy injury – with 15 interceptions. A “best value” in the NFL. He announces improvement for 2023.
“I will reduce the number of interceptions I make. That’s a guarantee,” Prescott stated clearly in a recent press conference.
Last month, the 29-year-old already made comments about losing the ball last season, but was misquoted. During a youth football camp, he said that he would no longer throw “tipped” interceptions in 2023. It was reported, on the other hand, that he assured to produce less than ten interceptions.
Despite his announcement, the quarterback does not want to fundamentally change his style of play: “I’m not going to stop being aggressive. We’re trying to improve our chemistry here. That’s who our coach is and that’s who I am. That’s the confidence I’ve gained in myself, and I’ve worked so hard to have that confidence and make the throws I make.”
Asked about two interceptions he threw in practice, he replied, “That’s only two, right? If that continues, then come back to me and it might be that my mood has changed a little bit. “
The Cowboys themselves don’t seem worried either. For one thing, Prescott was considered quite pass-proof before the season (he threw 50 interceptions in his previous six NFL seasons), and for another, head coach Mike McCarthy is known for operating with a playbook that allows the quarterback to have few ball downs.
Want an example? Aaron Rodgers threw more than ten interceptions only twice under McCarthy’s care (2006 to 2018).
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones backs Prescott
Franchise owner Jerry Jones also believes his quarterback will have a better year. “What happened last year was unexpected in terms of turnovers. What we expect Dak to do is not pass the ball and protect the ball.”
“And that’s – when I think of Dak – the first thing that comes to mind. That’s what he’s good at,” Jones continued.
