The AFC South will be decided between two teams: The Jacksonville Jaguars and the Tennessee Titans. And that’s in a head-to-head duel on the final game day. Are both of them therefore out of sorts on the next game day?
The AFC South is fiercely competitive. Both the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Tennessee Titans can still grab the division crown, which entitles them to the playoffs.
The battle will be decided on the final day of play when the two meet.
No matter what happens in Week 17.
Peter Schrager already addressed what no one wants to hear on “Good Morning Football” because of this: how will both teams perform on the upcoming game day if it has no meaning for either?
Tiebreaker will decide
After losing on Christmas Eve (14-19) to the Houston Texans, Tennessee is currently second in the division behind the Jaguars with a record of 7-8.
Jacksonville also moved to 7-8 with a 19-3 win over the New York Jets and currently wins the tiebreaker with the Titans because the Jaguars won the first meeting of the season.
But even if either team leads with a win in Week 17, the division winner will be determined in Week 18. Either there will then be only one team with nine wins under their belt, or there will once again be a tiebreaker between the two teams.
Should both teams be at 8-9 at the end of the Regular Season, there are two possibilities: The Titans won the matchup, even the tiebreaker against the Jaguars and have the better record in the division.
If the Jaguars have won, they have won the head-to-head matchup with the Titans twice and stay ahead.
Jaguars with momentum, Titans down
Both teams will likely look at the coming week from different angles, though. Tennessee recently lost five straight games, while Jacksonville has won three in a row and five of its past seven.
The momentum is with Jacksonville, who may want to maintain the same in Houston next Sunday.
The Titans already play Dallas on Thursday, could spare personnel and then spend ten days preparing for the all-important game of the season.
Head Coach Vrabel with vague statements
Rookie cornerback Roger McCreary vented his disappointment after the loss to the Texans, but also hinted at wanting to get out of the mire:
“I feel really bad right now. We all know we’ve got it. We just have to go to the next game and try to get ourselves a win. “
Head coach Mike Vrabel, looking ahead to the Dallas game, put it more cautiously: “We’ve got some players that have played a lot for us but are far from 100 percent We’re going to try to figure out who’s available to us and then make some decisions.”
For the Titans – like the Jaguars – there is one more game to win. But it’s not the next one.
