The New Orleans Saints have already lost their fourth game in a row against the Buffalo Bills. Besides a long injured list, the main problem seems to be at the quarterback position: Trevor Siemian is a reliable passer, but a playoff appearance should not be expected from him.

New Orleans/Munich – For regular visitors to the Caesars Superdome, it was an unfamiliar sound. Boos rained down from the stands onto the field in the third quarter.

Quarterback Trevor Siemian and the New Orleans Saints’ offence had been stopped yet again by the Buffalo Bills’ defence. This is not a snapshot in time, but a permanent condition that has defined the games of the proud franchise for several weeks now.

“We weren’t good enough to win today. I didn’t really play well,” the dejected signal caller admitted after the Thanksgiving night game. It was the fourth loss in a row, and the playoffs are a distant memory for now with a record of 5-6.

Up front, though, it must be noted that Siemian has no easy task at the moment. Star running back Alvin Kamara has been missing since Week 10 due to injury, and Michael Thomas, the Saints’ best receiver, is also unavailable.

And then there’s the fact that Siemian isn’t even the number one at the quarterback position: that role was actually due to Jameis Winston, who tore his ACL against Tampa Bay in Week 8 and kept the franchise steady in the playoff race with a record of 4-2.

Siemian still led New Orleans to victory against the Buccaneers, but since then the club has slipped bit by bit.

Trevor Siemian: Passing statistics leave much to be desired

If you take a look at the 29-year-old’s statistics, his positive touchdown-to-interception ratio stands out: Nine times Siemians throws found the end zone, only three times they landed with the opponent. At first glance, a solid record for an NFL playmaker.

In the following statistics, however, the tide gradually turns. 1,083 passing yards in four and a half games is not an exhilarating figure, his 216.6 yards per game rank 26th in the league.

Siemian’s 6.3 yards per attempt is also well below average, Winston scored a yard more per throw, Kyler Murray holds the quarterback best with 8.9 yards. The passer’s completion percentage is the worst of all starting quarterbacks at 57.2 percent, with only Ryan Fitzpatrick – who suffered a serious injury in Week 1 – trailing Siemian at 50 percent.

Siemian is not a gamechanger

The stats reflect what many Saints fan complain about: Siemian is a reliable playmaker, however, the 29-year-old lacks that certain something that separates the real stars from “normal quarterbacks” – the 29-year-old is not a “gamechanger”.

This fact was also his undoing in Denver. In 2016, the former Northwestern University passer succeeded Peyton Manning with the Broncos. The 2015 seventh-round pick did well, finishing the year with a record of 9-7, 3,401 passing yards, 18 touchdowns and only ten interceptions (14 total games completed).

Siemian then slumped in 2017: In eleven games, the 29-year-old recorded just twelve touchdowns compared to 14 interceptions, and due to poor performances and injuries, he was replaced in some games by Brock Osweiler and Paxton Lynch.

Trevor Siemian: Can’t do it without help

While in Denver it was the strong defence around Von Miller and the no-fly zone secondary that made life easier for Siemian, in New Orleans Alvin Kamara in particular took much of the offensive responsibility off him. With the superstar out, Siemian is now on his own, although the Saints defence is capable of great things on a good day (like against Tampa Bay).

The big-play potential that New Orleans has benefited from in recent years with Drew Brees and just Kamara is noticeably missing from the offense.

However, the NFL season is far from over, six games can still shake up the playoff picture and with it the Saints’ chances.

Will Trevor Siemian still be on the field then?

“We’ll have to take a good look at what we’re doing right now and who we’re doing it with,” Head Coach Sean Payton let slip after the game. “We’re going to look at everything. That’s what we have to do, obviously. “

An alternative could possibly be Taysom Hill. The Saints’ Swiss Army Knife has only been on the field as an option so far, but already took over the helm of the offense last season – Hill still managed to win three of four games.

Trevor Siemian: Game against Dallas as last chance?

But Payton and the Saints don’t have much time to think. Already on Friday night, the next opponent awaits, in the Thursday Night Game New Orleans hosts the Dallas Cowboys, who are also going through a bit of a slump.

This game could be Trevor Siemian’s last chance to stay in the NFL for the long haul. He will need a good performance against the Cowboys defence.
