Following the affair between Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel, “The Athletic” has published a comprehensive report. According to the report, Russini clearly violated the publication’s principles.

The affair between journalist Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel, head coach of the New England Patriots, made headlines throughout the NFL for months. Now, Russini’s former employer, “The Athletic,” has released a comprehensive report.

According to the report, Russini violated key guidelines of the media company through her relationship with Vrabel. “Russini’s relationship with Vrabel constituted a clear violation of ‘The Athletic’s’ standards,” wrote Mike Semel, the editorial director responsible for standards and editorial quality, in the report.

“Regardless of whether it was a romantic relationship, this was a violation and should have been disclosed.”

Regarding her reporting, Semel “found no clear evidence that would lead to the conclusion that Russini used her platform to promote Vrabel or help his teams during her time at ‘The Athletic,’” the report states.

However, there are “examples of Russini writing about Vrabel in gushing tones, which, in hindsight, come across as embarrassing or even awkward,” he continued.

Russini herself issued a brief statement in response to the investigation. “I stand by all the reports I’ve written throughout my career,” she was quoted as saying.

Over 900 articles by Russini reviewed

According to the report, Semel reviewed 903 articles and 77 videos that included Russini’s name as an author, contributor, or a mention of her reporting. He analyzed 204 episodes of a podcast that Russini co-hosted, as well as a series of appearances she made in other media outlets while working for “The Athletic.”

He also interviewed staff members but, according to a source with direct knowledge of the investigation, did not speak with Russini herself.

According to the report, the vast majority of Russini’s work at “The Athletic” had nothing to do with Vrabel or his teams. “In interviews with editors and reporters with whom she worked most closely, it became clear that Russini had a broad network of sources in the NFL and was not limited to Vrabel or the Patriots,” the report states.

The report is the result of a months-long investigation following the revelation of the relationship between Vrabel and Russini in April. After photos were published showing the two in an intimate moment together at a hotel, they initially denied having an affair. Both Vrabel and Russini are married and have children.

Russini later resigned from her position at “The Athletic,” and Vrabel also admitted to misconduct. The Patriots coach announced that he intended to seek help and also missed parts of the NFL Draft.
