Stefon Diggs is working hard to prepare for the new season. However, the wide receiver is currently without a team. He is convinced, though, that he could play a key role on any roster.
And he’s apparently using this time to get a very detailed overview of the rosters of NFL franchises. In doing so, the 32-year-old has noticed that he could actually play a key role on any team—not as the No. 1 receiver, but certainly as a starter.
In a video posted on his “YouTube” channel titled “Back in Motion,” Diggs says with conviction: “In my opinion, I could compete with anyone.” He adds that this excludes the top receivers who are clear number ones. He then emphasizes: “But name me a number two who’s better than me.”
The four-time Pro Bowler provides the answer himself: “There’s no number two on any team. Let’s assume people know what’s at stake, and we tell them: ‘Okay, you don’t want to give me the number-one spot. Name your number-two receiver right now and tell me how much he makes,’ and then my final question is: ‘ Is he better than me?'”
Diggs wants to return to the NFL: Best No. 2 receiver?
This would put Diggs in the same league as, among others, Davante Adams of the Los Angeles Rams, Tee Higgins of the Cincinnati Bengals, and George Pickens of the Dallas Cowboys. Last season—his only one with the New England Patriots—Diggs racked up 1,013 receiving yards and four touchdowns. Mind you, as the No. 1 receiver. However, those numbers were below average by his standards.
That said, Diggs was coming off a season in which he returned from a torn ACL—the first serious injury of his career. The fact that the Patriots parted ways with him after just one season, despite a three-year contract, wasn’t solely due to on-field reasons: In the spring, the former fifth-round pick faced charges of aggravated strangulation and assault, but was acquitted. The NFL is also no longer threatening any penalties in this matter.
This should make his comeback easier. Diggs certainly doesn’t lack the confidence to add a few more successful chapters to his NFL career, as his recent statements underscore. The video also shows him preparing for the new season. In that sense, it conveys more than just a single message to the teams: Diggs is still hungry. His NFL career is not meant to end with his first Super Bowl appearance.
