Johnny Manziel: Fallen Football Hero Makes Successful MMA Debut

In Las Vegas, Johnny Manziel beats up his opponent in no time. But the former Cleveland Browns quarterback plans to leave it at that.

Former NFL pro Johnny Manziel has made a successful foray into MMA.

In his mixed martial arts debut on Saturday night, the 33-year-old made short work of social media influencer Bob Menery, winning by technical knockout in the first round in Las Vegas.

In the process, Manziel demonstrated his very real skills in this popular combat sport. He landed kicks to the body and a takedown. His dominance was so striking that the referee stopped the fight after 2 minutes and 16 seconds.

However, the victory was likely not the start of a new career. Manziel said afterward that he probably wouldn’t fight again: “It was pretty good for a one-off.”

Manziel won the Heisman Trophy in 2012

At the start of the past decade, Manziel was among the most promising talents in American football. As quarterback for Texas A&M University, he won the Heisman Trophy; two years later, he was selected by the Cleveland Browns in the first round of the NFL Draft.

There, however, he was never able to fully realize his potential, which was also due to his behavior off the field. His excessive alcohol and drug use repeatedly caused scandals. After two years, during which he racked up 1,675 yards and seven touchdowns, he was released by the Browns.

He later tried his hand at other leagues, including the Canadian Football League, but he was never able to recapture the form he had shown in college.
