NFL – What Jaxson Dart can learn from Patrick Mahomes

Jaxson Dart has an OC on the New York Giants in Matt Nagy who has worked with Patrick Mahomes. That can also bring advantages.

Matt Nagy had to clarify something first.

“He’s Jaxson Dart. He’s not Patrick Mahomes,” said Nagy, the New York Giants’ new offensive coordinator. In that role, he works closely with the quarterback.

The fact that Nagy also has a history with Mahomes naturally leads to the assumption that Nagy is taking something from that collaboration into his work with Dart. Or that Dart is adapting something.

Nagy worked in Kansas City in 2017, when Mahomes was in his first season and spent most of his time on the bench. After his time as head coach with the Chicago Bears, he returned to the Chiefs in 2022. For the past three years, he was offensive coordinator under Andy Reid.

And indeed, there are things Dart can learn from Mahomes, even if Nagy doesn’t want to compare the two.

Dart vs. Mahomes: “You have to be Jaxson Dart”

“We can use that more for process, maybe routines or how we have things structured,” Nagy said. “Most importantly, I know how much respect Jaxson has for Patrick. We talked a little bit about the process and what he’s been through. But we also made it clear: You have to be Jaxson Dart. And that’s exactly what he’s going to do.”

Nagy also revealed that the Kansas City Chiefs took a hard look at Dart in 2025. Dart was drafted 25th overall by the Giants. In his first season, he replaced Russell Wilson as the starter early in the season.

“Back then, a year or two ago, I didn’t realize how tough he was and how well he could run,” Nagy said. “He’s a really good runner, almost underrated in that area – plus he’s physically strong, plays the quarterback position clean. You could see right away that he’s a real competitive guy.”
