NFL Playoffs: Los Angeles Rams end Chicago Bears’ Super Bowl dreams – third matchup with Seattle Seahawks

The Los Angeles Rams end the Chicago Bears’ Super Bowl dreams and advance to the NFC Championship Game against the Seattle Seahawks.

The Los Angeles Rams have reached the NFC Championship Game.

Head coach Sean McVay’s team won 20-17 (10-10) in overtime in the divisional playoffs at the Chicago Bears.

The Rams are now poised to win their second Super Bowl with quarterback Matthew Stafford after 2021.

But first, they will face their NFC West rivals, the Seattle Seahawks, for the third time in the Championship Game. Both teams won one game each in the regular season.

NFL: Bears shut down Rams superstar Adams

The first drive of the game ended in an interception: Bears quarterback Caleb Williams threw into the arms of Rams cornerback Cobie Durant just short of the end zone. The visitors did better: after 14 plays and 85 yards, running back Kyren Williams powered his way into the end zone.

But the Bears fought back. For the second time, head coach Ben Johnson decided against a field goal on 4th down – and this time Williams found D.J. Moore in the end zone to make it 7-7.

With snow and wind at Soldier Field, both teams struggled to bridge the field. Chicago turned the ball over on another fourth down. For Los Angeles, star receivers Puka Nacua (27 yards in the first half) and Davante Adams (0 yards) couldn’t get into the game, and Matthew Stafford was sacked three times.

It wasn’t until the end of the second quarter that points were scored again: Kicker Cairo Santos made it 10-7 for the Bears with a 48-yard field goal, Harrison Mevis countered with a 32-yard field goal as the clock ran down to make it 10-10 at halftime.

NFL: Williams conjures Bears into overtime

The Rams offense’s problems continued after the break. The O-line could barely withstand the pressure from the Bears defense, and Stafford was lucky to keep the ball after another sack.

However, Chicago didn’t fare much better. Williams threw his second interception, and once again it was Durant who intercepted the pass from the 2024 No. 1 draft pick. The busiest players in the third quarter were the punters.

In the final quarter, Adams finally made his presence felt. With his first catch of the night, the former Packers star kept a 91-yard drive alive that ended in Kyren Williams’ second touchdown – L.A. retook the lead, 17-10. After the previous drive came to an abrupt end at the 2-yard line, Chicago got another chance to tie the game with seconds left. And as so often this season, Caleb Williams was there: under massive pressure from three Rams defenders, the 24-year-old backed up nearly 30 yards and then found tight end Cole Kmet in the end zone with a magical pass – 17-17, overtime.

NFL: Rams win in overtime

The Rams had the ball first in overtime, but failed to make any significant gains. The Bears then needed only a few yards to get within field goal range, but Williams threw his third interception. Los Angeles failed to capitalize on the golden opportunity, but Mevis converted the decisive 42-yard kick for a 20-17 victory.
