Detroit Lions: Dan Campbell wants live lion as mascot

Dan Campbell, head coach of the Detroit Lions, is still calling for a live lion as the team mascot. However, the league seems to be putting a stop to the 47-year-old’s request

The fact that press appointments with Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell are always good for curious stories is nothing new. In an interview with the satirical format “Pardon my Take”, Campbell once again called for a lion on the sidelines.

The owner of the Lions, Sheila Ford Hamp, would have no problem with this, but the NFL would prohibit it.

Campbell already expressed his desire for a live lion as a mascot in an interview with “Pardon my Take” in 2021.

“I would love to have a lion and stroll around the training ground with it on a leash. For example, we could stand behind the kickers while they try to make a field goal,” he said.

He added at the time that the lion’s welfare would be paramount as he would be fed and loved. A pedicure would also be scheduled from time to time.

Living animals are not uncommon in the NFL

Although Campbell’s claim is probably tongue-in-cheek, live animals as team mascots are not uncommon in football – especially in college football.

In the NFL, the Denver Broncos have a horse running through the stadium before games, while the Seattle Seahawks have an eagle flying through the air. In this context, there is repeated criticism from animal rights activists who accuse the teams of cruelty to animals.
