The Kansas City Chiefs are experiencing a debacle and missing a historic opportunity. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes has no chance against the Philadelphia Eagles defense.
The Philadelphia Eagles have won Super Bowl LIX, while the Kansas City Chiefs experienced a debacle in the NFL season final in New Orleans.
The Eagles dominated the game almost at will and won 40-22. The Chiefs didn’t get into the game at all for a long time and missed the historic chance to win the third Super Bowl in a row.
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered six sacks, more than in any other game of his NFL career. The superstar QB ended the game with 257 passing yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.
The Eagles even had the luxury of replacing quarterback Jalen Hurts with backup Kenny Pickett in the final minutes.
Hurts finished with 221 passing yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He also ran for 72 yards and a touchdown.
Eagles get on the board with a “tush push”
After the first drives of the game were dominated by the defenses and did not score, Hurts threw a long pass to Jahan Dotson with 6:30 minutes left on the clock, which the receiver caught just outside the end zone.
The Eagles pushed the ball across the line for a “tush push,” with Hurts scoring the first touchdown of Super Bowl LIX. Kicker Jake Elliott made it 7-0.
The Chiefs offense around Mahomes and Kelce had a difficult start and didn’t score in the first quarter.
Cooper DeJean with “Pick Six” on his birthday
At the start of the second quarter, Hurts threw an interception, but the Chiefs were unable to capitalize. Instead, it was Eagles kicker Elliott who scored the next points with a field goal from 27 yards out.
After that, things got really tough for Mahomes. First, the Chiefs QB was sacked twice by the Eagles’ strong defense, then he threw an interception that Cooper DeJean carried into the end zone for a “pick six.”
The rookie cornerback gave himself the best present for his 22nd birthday on Super Bowl Sunday.
Horror statistics for the Chiefs at halftime
But the Chiefs’ horror quarter wasn’t over yet. Right before their own end zone, Mahomes threw his second interception shortly after the two-minute warning. Hurts passed to A.J. Brown, and the Eagles went into the break with a 24-0 lead.
The Chiefs not only failed to score, they only managed a single first down in the entire first half. The offense of the last two years’ champions managed just 23 yards of space.
Xavier Worthy puts the Chiefs on the scoreboard
After the halftime show with rap superstar Kendrick Lamar, the teams returned to the field, with the Chiefs trying to keep their slim chance of a comeback alive.
However, their hopes quickly faded. Elliott’s field goal and DeVonta Smith’s touchdown extended the Eagles’ lead to 34-0.
Towards the end of the third quarter, the Chiefs finally got on the scoreboard with a touchdown from receiver Xavier Worthy. However, the subsequent two-point conversion failed.
Kicker Elliott very accurate
Kicker Elliott, who scored from 48 and 50 yards, added six more points in the final quarter of an hour.
As the minutes ticked down, the Eagles began celebrating on the sidelines.
The touchdowns scored by Chiefs receivers DeAndre Hopkins and Xavier Worthy (157 yards, 2 TDs) in the final minutes were only a matter of cosmetic concern.
