The Philadelphia Eagles are focusing on their offence and are looking to sign quarterback Jalen Hurts to a long-term contract. To do that, though, they’ll have to save money elsewhere.

Jeffrey Lurie is prioritizing – and he’s prioritizing the offense. The owner of the Philadelphia Eagles has publicly made it clear that he always wants to put more money into the offence than into the defence.

The reason: against the top quarterbacks, a defence can’t do much anyway.

“It’s very hard to stop them. Jalen Hurts, Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Aaron Rodgers and the whole group. It’s impossible to stop them, given the rules in this league,” Lurie explained.

The Eagles got to the Super Bowl last season, losing narrowly 35-38 to the Kansas City Chiefs in the final. Philadelphia was the third best team in the NFL in both points and yards.

Lurie knows that many factors have to come together for a team to be successful. But, “The hardest part in this business is certainly the lack of really good quarterbacks. We have one of those. We have a very special player and a very special person at that position. That’s really a good sign for us. “

Hurts played best season of his career – and continues to work hard

Hurts played his third season of service to the Eagles in 2022. He played the best season of his career in several respects with 3,701 passing yards, 66.5 percent passing yards received, 22 touchdown passes, a 101.6 rating and 13 rushing touchdowns himself.

Head coach Nick Sirianni is pleased to note that his passer is looking to steadily improve. “He’s still in the weight room working hard. People have been asking me, ‘How good can Jalen Hurts get?’ Nobody knows what Jalen’s ceiling can be, but I know, God willing, that he can reach it. And it’s because of all the qualities he brings to the table.”

Lurie also raves about the quarterback: “His future is going to be great. He’s 24 years old. Honestly, I don’t know if I’ve ever met anyone that mature at 24 years old.”

Nonetheless, there are questions about his future as Hurts faces the final season of his rookie contract. General manager Howie Roseman hopes a long-term deal will be finalised “relatively soon. “

Mega-contract of Hurts calls for savings at other positions

At the same time, he’s aware of the challenge involved: “We’re approaching it with our eyes open, understanding that we’re going to have to kind of turn it over somewhere else.” What he means by that is that in order to fund an expensive quarterback, cuts have to be made at other positions with younger players.

This is not always easy to implement and requires a lucky hand in the NFL Draft, for example. It is quite possible that the cost-cutting measures will take place in the defence. Because Lurie knows that no one can do anything against the top quarterbacks anyway.
