NFL commissioner Roger Goodell facing contract extension – historic deal beckons

At the end of the year, Roger Goodell’s contract as NFL commissioner expires. At next week’s meeting of team owners, an extension with the 64-year-old is expected to be discussed. According to reports, the new working paper will be of historic proportions.

When NFL owners meet next week in Phoenix, Arizona, for talks, a contract extension for Commissioner Roger Goodell is likely to be on the agenda.

According to “ESPN”, the new contract is said to be the highest-paid contract in history for a league boss – across all sports.

According to the report, the two sides have been talking about a new three-year contract since last season – it would be the fourth extension for the 64-year-old.

There is no word yet on the targeted salary, though much of it is said to be in bonuses dependent on the league’s success under Goodell’s leadership.

$63.9 million 2022

The commissioner’s earnings from his current job are also not fully known.

However, according to American media reports, the official received $63.9 million in the 2021/22 season.

Even if the 64-year-old is regularly booed at events, the owners are likely to be satisfied with his work. In the 17 years of his tenure, the NFL became by far the most profitable sports league in the world.

Goodell’s list of accomplishments is long

Goodell was able to sell the NFL’s broadcasting rights for a triple-digit billion amount in the last bidding round.

Moreover, it was also thanks to his leadership that players were paid their full salaries during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prices in NFL team sales have risen tremendously during his tenure. While the Minnesota Vikings fetched 600 million dollars in 2006, the Denver Broncos were recently sold for the sum of 4.65 billion dollars.

Critics of the commissioner point to his handling of the Ray Rice domestic violence scandal and the concussion issue, among other things.
