The Vikings have a new Minneapolis Miracle. Against the Indianpolis Colts they manage the biggest comeback in NFL history. In the end, they also secure the playoffs with the overtime victory.
Munich – The Minnesota Vikings turned an embarrassment in front of their home crowd into the greatest comeback in NFL history. Against the Indianapolis Colts, the Vikings overcame a 33-point intermission deficit to win 39-36 after overtime.
The old record was held by the Buffalo Bills, who rallied from a 32-point deficit against the Houston Oilers in 1993 to win 41-38, also after overtime.
At the same time, the Vikings won the NFC North title and made the playoffs. This means that the Detroit Lions can do whatever they want on Sunday against the New York Jets.
Minnesota Vikings: it looked like a sad night
But for a long time it looked like a sad evening for Kirk Cousins and Co. Already in the first quarter the Vikings had nothing to report. The Colts carried a blocked punt back into the end zone for the first touchdown, after which Matt Ryan added to the offense and running back Deon Jackson increased the lead to 17:0.
The picture did not change until the break. The Vikings offence was completely out of control. Significant was the pick-six of quarterback Cousins, which Julian Blackmon intercepted for the third touchdown of the evening. The 33-0 halftime score seemed to be the deciding factor.
In the third quarter, Indianapolis let up a little, Minnesota scored two touchdowns and were allowed to sniff at the comeback. Because the Colts’ defence collapsed more and more. Minnesota came within eight points. A bad call by the referees also took away what was supposed to be a safe return touchdown for the Vikings.
Minnesota Vikings: Greg Joseph is the hero
But an outrageous run by Dalvin Cook and the subsequent two-point conversion forced overtime. Minnesota got the ball first but had to punt. A few seconds before the end, kicker Greg Joseph had the chance to win the game from 40 yards out – and made an ice-cold punt.
